What the Official Guidance Says an Applicant Like This Must Show
This is general guidance for a retired applicant visiting family in New Zealand on a visitor visa (often called a tourist visa in India), taken from Immigration New Zealand. It is not a detail of the case above.
- Proof of retirement or a pension is one of the home-country ties INZ names, alongside other financial and family links (INZ genuine intentions).
- A self-funded visitor needs NZD 1,000 a month, or NZD 400 if accommodation is prepaid, shown by statements in the applicant’s own name; a sponsor may support the application using the INZ 1025 form (INZ visitor visa).
- INZ may ask for the names, contact details and visa or citizenship status of family or friends in New Zealand (INZ genuine intentions).
- The applicant must show they can leave New Zealand: an onward ticket or proof of funds to buy one (INZ visitor visa).
- INZ asks health questions on every visitor application; a stay under 6 months does not normally need a chest X-ray, and under 12 months does not normally need a medical certificate (INZ visitor visa).
- INZ says evidence must be genuine; false or misleading evidence may lead to a decline, and police certificates are asked for in some cases, for example where total time in New Zealand will be 24 months or longer (INZ genuine intentions; INZ visitor visa).
If Your Application Was Refused: What to Look for in the Letter
If a family-visit application was declined, see whether the letter relies on funds, genuine intentions or both. The genuine intentions row of the refusal letter wording guide reproduces INZ’s own wording, and INZ describes what can follow a decline on its declined visa page. Our New Zealand visitor visa refusal reasons page and FAQs continue from there.
Have a refusal letter in front of you? You can email it to IndoWorld. The experts read the letter and compare it with the application that was refused.
