Australia Work and Holiday Visa Subclass 462 – Live, Work & Travel in Australia

The Australia Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) lets eligible people aged 18 to 30 have an extended holiday in Australia and work to help fund their trip. Indian passport holders can apply for a first visa only after being randomly selected in an official visa ballot. The first visa allows a stay of up to 12 months; a second or third visa may be possible only if you meet the official specified-work and other requirements. It is not a job-seeker visa and does not guarantee a job. IndoWorld Visa & Education Services, based in Vadodara, Gujarat, helps applicants from Gujarat and across India understand the official rules and prepare their visa application. We help with the visa application only: we do not provide or arrange jobs.

India takes part in the Work and Holiday program under the Australia–India trade agreement (see the Australian Government side letter). Home Affairs sets an annual limit, or cap, of 1,000 first visas for Indian passport holders in each program year (1 July to 30 June). This is a limit on visas granted, not a guaranteed place for any individual. Because demand is high, Indian applicants must first register in a ballot (AUD 25 registration fee). If selected, you have 28 days to apply for the visa, which has its own application charge. Details are on the official Home Affairs Work and Holiday visa page.

With a first Work and Holiday visa you can do short-term work to help pay for your holiday, and study for up to 4 months. Home Affairs says you can do any kind of work, but usually only for the same employer for 6 months. If the main purpose of your stay is to work or to study, Home Affairs suggests considering a work or student visa instead.

Objective Guidance. No False Claims. Ballot selection is random and run by the Australian Government. A ballot selection is an invitation to apply, not a visa grant, and you must still meet every eligibility requirement. Registration is only possible during the registration window announced on the official ballot page, and we do not predict future ballot dates.

Guided by our Route-Fit Framework and Decision Principles, before you pay the AUD 840 first visa application charge (unless you are exempt) we review whether you appear to meet the official criteria and whether your documents are consistent. Charges are set by Home Affairs and can change, so confirm them on the official first visa page.

ELIGIBILITY

Who Can Apply? Eligibility Requirements

These are the criteria Home Affairs lists for the first Work and Holiday visa. You must meet all of them. See the official page.

1

Indian passport, aged 18 to 30

You need a valid passport from an eligible country (India is one) and must be 18 to 30 inclusive when you apply. You must apply before your 31st birthday: the deadline is midnight Australian Eastern time the day before it.

2

Selected in the ballot

Indian passport holders must register in the pre-application ballot and be randomly selected before they can apply for a first visa. Registration needs a valid national ID card: for India, a PAN card, not an Aadhaar card.

3

Post-secondary study

For Indian passport holders, Home Affairs requires at least 2 years of post-secondary study, meaning study after Year 12 or its equivalent. Not every course will necessarily count; your evidence must show the study Home Affairs describes.

4

At least functional English

Shown by an accepted English test taken within 12 months before you apply, or by the English-medium study or other evidence Home Affairs lists. See the documents section below for the test scores.

5

Enough money

Home Affairs says this is usually about AUD 5,000 for your initial stay, plus the fare to your next destination after leaving Australia (or proof you already hold the ticket). It is a benchmark, not a guarantee of approval.

6

Other conditions

Apply from outside Australia and on your own. No dependent children can accompany you. You must not have previously entered Australia on a subclass 462 or 417 visa, and you must meet the health and character requirements. Your immigration history is considered.

This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice. Check the current criteria on the Home Affairs website before you rely on them.

HOW IT WORKS

Ballot and Application Process

Separate stages with separate costs. A ballot selection is an invitation to apply, not a visa grant.

1

Prepare your ID and ImmiAccount

Create an ImmiAccount and set up multi-factor authentication. Have a valid Indian passport and PAN card ready, because the ID details on your registration and your visa application must match.

2

Register during the registration window

Registration costs AUD 25 and is not refunded, even if you are not selected or withdraw. You can register once per ballot, and only while the registration period is open for India.

3

Random selection

Selection is automated and random; there are no selection criteria. If you are selected you receive a ‘Notification of Selection’ email. If you are not selected, Home Affairs does not notify you.

4

Invitation to apply

You have 28 calendar days from the notification to apply (cut-off midnight Australian Eastern time on the 28th day). The letter does not guarantee that you are eligible or that a visa will be granted.

5

Full visa application and charge

Apply online in ImmiAccount from outside Australia, attach your documents and pay the visa application charge (AUD 840 for the first visa, unless exempt). Do not book flights until the visa is granted.

6

Decision and travel

Home Affairs expects an average processing time of around three months. You must enter Australia within 12 months of the grant; the 12-month stay starts on the date you enter.

Annual Cap, Fees and Funds

Different things that are easy to confuse. Only the registration fee and the visa charge are paid to the government.

Annual cap: 1,000 places

This is the yearly limit on first visas for Indian passport holders. It is not a guaranteed place for any applicant, and the ballot does not change it.

Ballot registration: AUD 25

Paid when you register. Not refunded if you are not selected or if you withdraw.

Visa application charge: AUD 840

The first Work and Holiday visa charge (unless exempt), paid when you apply. You might also pay for health checks, police certificates and biometrics.

Funds: usually about AUD 5,000

Evidence of money for your stay and onward travel. It is not a fee, and holding it does not guarantee a visa.

Charges and rules can change. Always confirm current figures on the ballot page and the first visa page.

Documents Required

1

Passport, Birth Certificate and National ID

Passport pages showing your photo, personal details and issue and expiry dates; a birth certificate showing both parents’ names (or an alternative Home Affairs lists); and both sides of your national ID card (PAN card for India).

2

Post-Secondary Study Evidence

Evidence of at least 2 years of post-secondary study (study after Year 12 or its equivalent), such as certificates and transcripts. Whether a particular course qualifies is for Home Affairs to decide.

3

English Language Evidence

A test taken within 12 months of applying: IELTS (average 4.5 across the 4 parts), PTE Academic (overall 30) or Cambridge C1 Advanced (147). TOEFL iBT (32) counts only if taken on or before 25 July 2023, so it is not a current option. Or the English-medium study evidence Home Affairs lists.

4

Evidence of Funds

Genuine, accessible funds consistent with your circumstances: usually about AUD 5,000 for your stay, plus a ticket out of Australia or money to buy one.

5

Character Documents

Home Affairs may ask for police certificates from each country where you spent a total of 12 months or more in the last 10 years since turning 16 (including India), and military records if you served. It will tell you if you need them.

6

Health Requirement

You must meet the health requirement. You may be asked to have health examinations, either before you apply or when Home Affairs tells you; what is needed depends on your circumstances.

Documents not in English must be translated into English. Check the current list on the Home Affairs first visa page before you apply.

Work Rights and What Happens When Your Visa Ends

What work and study are permitted?

Home Affairs says you can do any kind of work on a first Work and Holiday visa, and study for up to 4 months. Usually you can work for the same employer for only 6 months (visa condition 8547). Under the current official rules, some work is exempt from that limit, including plant and animal cultivation anywhere in Australia, natural disaster recovery work, certain critical sectors (such as agriculture, health, aged and disability care, childcare, and tourism and hospitality) and some industries in northern Australia. Those exemptions apply until the Government makes further decisions, so check the official 6-month work limitation page. You must pay tax on your earnings.

Can you stay longer with a second or third visa?

The first visa cannot be extended. A second Work and Holiday visa requires you to have completed 3 months of specified subclass 462 work, and a third requires 6 months, under the official specified-work rules. Not every job in a regional postcode qualifies: the industry, location, dates, pay and evidence must meet the official criteria. For example, tourism and hospitality work counts only in Northern or Remote and Very Remote Australia or listed postcodes, and some secondary processing work is excluded. Doing regional work does not guarantee that you will be eligible for a second or third visa.

What about other visas later?

Another visa, for example an employer-sponsored or skilled visa, is a separate future possibility only if you independently meet that visa’s criteria and are eligible to apply under the rules in force at the time. A Work and Holiday visa does not lead automatically to sponsorship, a skilled visa or permanent residence.

INDOWORLD METHODOLOGY

How IndoWorld Reviews a Subclass 462 Application

Four areas from our Application Intelligence Framework that we focus on when reviewing an application against the official Home Affairs requirements.

Post-Secondary Study Evidence

We review whether your documents show at least 2 years of post-secondary study as Home Affairs describes it. We cannot decide whether a course qualifies; that decision is Home Affairs’s.

English Test Timing

An accepted English test must have been taken within 12 months before you apply. We help you plan test dates against that rule. TOEFL iBT results are accepted only if the test was taken on or before 25 July 2023.

Financial Evidence Review

Your financial evidence should be genuine, accessible and consistent with your circumstances. We review it for gaps or unexplained items. The usual AUD 5,000 benchmark does not guarantee approval.

Specified Work Planning

We explain how the official industry, location and evidence rules work, and what records to keep. We cannot promise that any work will count towards a second or third visa.

IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU?

Who Is This Visa Suitable For?

The Work and Holiday visa is designed for eligible young people who want an extended holiday in Australia and will work to help fund it. It suits applicants aged 18 to 30 who meet the education and English requirements, can show enough funds, are randomly selected in the ballot and can support themselves while travelling. It is not a route to a guaranteed job.

When This Route May Not Be Right for You

You need a guaranteed job first

This visa does not provide or arrange a job. If you need a confirmed employer before you leave India, it may not fit your plans. Home Affairs suggests a work visa if your main purpose is to work.

You want a direct route to permanent residence

The visa is temporary and cannot be extended. Any other visa is a separate matter and depends on its own requirements.

You may not meet the education or English requirements

You need at least 2 years of post-secondary study and at least functional English, shown with the evidence Home Affairs accepts.

You cannot meet the funds or ballot conditions

You need to show enough funds and be randomly selected in the ballot. Nobody can guarantee selection.

These are practical considerations, not additional legal exclusions. The official criteria are on the Home Affairs website.
