UK India Young Professionals Scheme Visa – Live and Work in the UK

The UK India Young Professionals Scheme (YPS) visa lets eligible Indian citizens aged 18 to 30 live and work in the UK for up to 24 months (2 years). Unlike a sponsored work visa, its official eligibility criteria do not include a job offer or employer sponsorship, but you must be selected in an official ballot before you can apply. IndoWorld Visa & Education Services, based in Vadodara, Gujarat, helps applicants from Gujarat and across India understand the official rules and prepare their visa application. We help with the visa application only: we do not provide or arrange jobs.

Entry to the scheme is by an official ballot run by the UK Home Office; GOV.UK is the authority for every rule on this page. Ballot entry is free and winners are chosen at random (3,000 places were available in 2026). If you are selected, you are invited to apply and have 90 days from the invitation email to apply online, prove your identity and provide your documents. Selection is not a visa grant, and the Home Office still decides every application.

The scheme is temporary: GOV.UK says most types of work are allowed, you can study (some courses need an ATAS certificate), and you can leave and return to the UK while the visa is valid. IndoWorld cannot arrange a job, enter the ballot in a way that improves your chance of selection, or influence the Home Office’s decision.

Ballot status: GOV.UK states that all 2026 ballots have closed and that there will be no further ballots in 2026. Details of any future ballot will be published on the official ballot page. We do not predict ballot dates, and no consultant can book a ballot place or guarantee selection.

Honest advice. No shortcuts. Guided by our Route-Fit Framework and Decision Principles, before you commit to UK government fees we review whether you appear to meet the official criteria and whether your documents are consistent. The visa application fee is £340 and is not refunded if the application is rejected; the Immigration Health Surcharge shown on GOV.UK for this visa is £1,552. Both are paid to the UK government when you apply, and amounts can change, so confirm them on GOV.UK.

ELIGIBILITY

Who Can Apply? Eligibility Requirements

These are the criteria listed on GOV.UK. You must meet all of them.

1

Indian citizen aged 18 to 30

You must be an Indian national or citizen aged 18 to 30, and at least 18 on the date you plan to travel to the UK. If you turn 31 after the visa is issued, you can stay for as long as the visa is valid.

2

Degree-level qualification

A bachelor’s degree or higher (Regulated Qualifications Framework level 6, 7 or 8), or an equivalent overseas qualification at degree level or above. If you are unsure of your level, GOV.UK advises checking with your college or university. IndoWorld does not issue official equivalency decisions.

3

£2,530 in personal savings

The £2,530 must have been available for 28 days in a row, and day 28 must fall within 31 days of your application. This is evidence of funds, not a fee paid to the government.

4

No children under 18

You cannot have children under 18 who live with you or for whom you are financially responsible.

5

No earlier stay under the scheme

You cannot apply if you have already been in the UK under this scheme or the Youth Mobility Scheme visa.

6

Selected in the ballot

You must first enter the India Young Professionals Scheme ballot and be selected before you can apply for the visa.

This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice. Check the current criteria on GOV.UK before you rely on them.

HOW IT WORKS

Ballot and Application Process

Six separate stages. Being selected in the ballot is only the third of them, and it is not a visa grant.

1

Check eligibility

Check the GOV.UK criteria above. You declare that you are eligible when you enter the ballot.

2

Enter the official ballot

Entry is free and is only possible during an announced entry window. One entry per person per ballot. You need your name, date of birth, passport details, a passport scan or photo, a phone number and an email address.

3

Wait for the random selection

Successful entries are picked at random and results are emailed within 2 weeks of the ballot closing. Unsuccessful results are final and cannot be appealed; you can enter a future ballot if you still meet the criteria.

4

If selected, follow the invitation

The invitation email gives you 90 days to apply online, pay and provide your documents. Follow its instructions and deadline exactly.

5

Submit the visa application and evidence

Apply online, pay the application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge, and provide your documents. GOV.UK says decisions usually take about 3 weeks after you apply, prove your identity and provide documents.

6

Complete identity verification

UKVI will tell you how to prove your identity. This may involve an appointment, so follow the instructions you are given and allow time. You must travel to the UK within 6 months of applying.

What You Pay and What You Must Show

Four different things. Only two of them are fees paid to the UK government.

Ballot entry: free

Entering the ballot costs nothing. Be cautious of anyone who charges for a ballot place or promises selection.

Visa application fee: £340

Paid when you apply. GOV.UK says it is not refunded if the application is rejected.

Immigration Health Surcharge: £1,552

The amount GOV.UK shows for this visa, paid when you apply. GOV.UK’s general surcharge page lists rates by visa type, so confirm the amount when you apply.

Savings: £2,530

Money you must hold and evidence with bank statements. It stays yours; it is not a payment to the government.

Fees and rules can change. Always confirm the current figures on GOV.UK before you pay.

Documents Required

1

Passport or Identity and Nationality Document

A valid passport or another document that shows your identity and nationality, as GOV.UK lists.

2

Degree Qualification Evidence

Proof of a bachelor’s degree or higher (RQF level 6, 7 or 8, or an equivalent overseas degree), plus written confirmation from your college or university that you completed your studies and graduated.

3

Savings Evidence (£2,530)

Bank statements showing at least £2,530 in personal savings available for 28 days in a row, with day 28 falling within 31 days of your application.

4

TB Test Result

Required if you live in India or another country on the GOV.UK list. Follow GOV.UK’s TB-testing guidance for where and how to take the test.

5

Police Certificate from India

A police or criminal-record certificate from India. GOV.UK links to guidance on certificates from overseas.

6

Translations and Extra Evidence

Documents not in English or Welsh need a certified translation. The Home Office may ask for further evidence depending on your circumstances.

Check the current list on GOV.UK before you apply.

Work Rights and What Happens When Your Visa Ends

What work is permitted under the UK YPS visa?

GOV.UK says most types of work are allowed. Self-employment and setting up a company are allowed only if your business premises are rented, any equipment is worth no more than £5,000, and you have no employees. Working as a professional sportsperson, such as a coach, is not allowed. You can also study, although some courses need an ATAS certificate. Most public funds benefits cannot be claimed, and family members cannot be included in your application; they must apply separately.

What happens as your 2-year visa nears its end?

This visa cannot be extended. Moving to a different UK immigration route later is not automatic: it depends on the requirements of that route, your circumstances and the rules in force at the time. For example, a Skilled Worker visa needs a sponsoring employer and a role that meets that route’s conditions, and an employer’s interest alone does not guarantee a visa. Check the official requirements on GOV.UK or take qualified advice before making plans that depend on switching.

INDOWORLD APPROACH

How IndoWorld Reviews a UK YPS Application

Four areas from our Application Intelligence Framework that we focus on when reviewing an application against the official GOV.UK requirements.

Qualification Evidence

We compare your degree documents with the level GOV.UK requires and check that your institution’s written confirmation is in order. We cannot issue an official equivalency decision; if your level is unclear, GOV.UK advises asking your college or university.

28-Day Savings Check

The £2,530 must be available for 28 days in a row, with day 28 within 31 days of your application. We review your statements against this rule so potential problems are visible before you apply.

90-Day Deadline Planning

After a ballot invitation you have 90 days from the email to apply, pay and prove your identity. We help you plan your documents so the timeline is realistic. We cannot extend the deadline.

Document Consistency

Names, passport details, degree records and bank statements should match across your documents. We look for inconsistencies that could raise questions, but we cannot prevent delays or refusals.

IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU?

Who Is This Visa Suitable For?

The UK India Young Professionals Scheme may suit eligible young Indian citizens who want a temporary stay in the UK of up to two years, can meet the financial requirements and are comfortable looking for work independently after they arrive. The visa does not come with a job.

When This Route May Not Be Right for You

You do not meet the criteria

For example, you are outside the age range, do not hold a degree-level qualification, cannot show £2,530 held for 28 days in a row, or have children under 18 who live with you.

You need a guaranteed job first

This route does not provide a job or sponsorship. If you need a confirmed employer before you leave India, it may not fit your plans.

You want a direct route to permanent residence

The visa is temporary and cannot be extended. Any later route depends on its own requirements and the rules at the time.

You are not selected in the ballot

A ballot place is required and selection is random. Nobody can guarantee it, and you cannot apply without it.

These are practical considerations, not additional legal exclusions. The official criteria are on GOV.UK.
