UK Student Dependant Visa

A UK Student Dependant Visa allows the married spouse, civil partner, or unmarried partner of an eligible international student to accompany or join them in the United Kingdom. If the application is successful, the dependant’s visa ends on the same date as the student’s. Dependants can usually work and study in the UK, subject to the conditions of their visa, and they pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) as part of the application, which provides access to the National Health Service (NHS).

Under the current UK Home Office rules (see GOV.UK: Student visa, your partner and children), a student can bring dependants only if they are a government-sponsored student starting a course that lasts longer than 6 months, or a full-time student on a postgraduate level course (RQF level 7 or above) that lasts 9 months or longer and is a PhD or other doctorate, or a research-based higher degree. Students on taught master’s programmes (such as MSc or MA) generally cannot bring dependants unless they are government-sponsored. Course eligibility and the funds rule (each dependant must have the required money for at least 28 consecutive days) are the first points to check.

IndoWorld evaluates your UK dependant eligibility across our Application Intelligence Framework and Document Logic Guide. We check the funds holding period, the relationship evidence and the course details on the student’s CAS. Official requirements are governed by GOV.UK Student visa: family members. Final decisions rest exclusively with UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).

Other official pages: tuberculosis tests for visa applicants, approved TB test clinics in India and paying the healthcare surcharge. IndoWorld Visa & Education Services is an independent consultancy. We check applications against the criteria published by the UK Home Office, but UKVI makes the decision on every application. We do not guarantee visa approvals or processing speeds.

Why Apply Through IndoWorld?

✦  Course Eligibility Check: Confirming that the lead student’s course, shown on the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), is a doctoral or research-based postgraduate programme, or a government-sponsored course, as the Home Office rules require.

✦  28-Day Funds Check: Checking that each dependant’s required funds have been held for at least 28 consecutive days, with the end of that period within 31 days of the application. The current amounts are set out on GOV.UK.

✦  Genuine & Subsisting Relationship Evidence: Organizing Indian marriage certificates, joint residence history, communication logs and ceremony photos to show a genuine and subsisting relationship (Appendix Relationship with Partner).

✦  TB Test Guidance: Guiding applicants through the tuberculosis test required for applicants from India, at a clinic approved by the Home Office (GOV.UK lists the approved clinics in India).

✦  Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) Check: Checking that the IHS payment is calculated for the length of the visa, which ends on the same date as the student’s, so that NHS access matches the visa.
