Canada Visitor Visa Case: Self-Employed Applicant, Combined Business and Tourism
A representative case involving a self-employed applicant preparing a Canada visitor visa application covering both a business meeting and personal tourism.
Applicant names and identifying details have been withheld or generalized to protect client confidentiality. This case study describes the type of application work handled by IndoWorld and the preparation approach used, without disclosing personally identifying information or a specific visa decision.
At a Glance
The Applicant’s Situation
The applicant ran a business and planned a trip to Canada combining a business meeting with several days of personal tourism, using accounts that mixed personal and business transactions.
What the Assessment Identified
The initial review found that mixed personal and business banking made it harder to see a clear picture of available funds, and the dual purpose of the trip needed to be explained clearly rather than left ambiguous.
Key Focus of This Case
Separating and explaining personal versus business banking activity, and clearly describing the combined purpose of the trip.
What IndoWorld Actually Did
- Reviewed personal and business bank statements to identify and explain mixed transactions
- Prepared a business meeting confirmation and itinerary
- Drafted a cover letter clearly describing the combined business-and-tourism purpose
- Cross-checked the application form against the supporting evidence
Evidence and Documentation Considered
- Personal and business bank statements
- Business meeting confirmation
- Combined travel itinerary
- Business registration documents
Where This Case Reached
The application was prepared and submitted to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada for decision.
What This Case Demonstrates
This case illustrates why mixed personal and business banking needs an explanation rather than being left for an officer to interpret on its own. See the IndoWorld Evidence Integrity Framework for more on this reasoning.
Self-employed travellers whose accounts mix business and personal transactions can read our Canada visitor visa proof-of-funds guidance on presenting bank records. What the official guidance says an applicant like this must show
This is general guidance from IRCC and Canadian law for a self-employed applicant combining a business meeting with tourism on a Canada visitor visa (the temporary resident visa, often called a tourist visa). It is not a description of the case above.
- Business visitor rules. IRCC’s business visitor page says a business visitor stays less than six months, does not enter the Canadian labour market, has a main place of business and source of income outside Canada, and holds documents that support the application. It lists meetings, conferences and trade fairs among permitted activities.
- No work. Under section 183 of the Regulations temporary residents must not work unless authorized, so the application should describe meetings or events attended, not work performed.
- Event codes. Where a conference or event is registered with IRCC, the organizer provides an event code to enter on the application. Not every event is registered.
- What to carry. The same page lists, for the border, letters of support from the parent company, a letter of invitation from the Canadian host business, contact details for the host and proof of enough money for the stay and the return home.
- Funds. The eligibility page requires enough money for the stay. If personal and business accounts are both used, say so in the application so that the statements can be read as showing the money you have access to.
- The tourism part counts too. The ties and return-home points on the eligibility page apply to the whole trip, not only the business meeting.

If your application was refused: what to look for in the letter
For a mixed business-and-tourism trip, a refusal may query the purpose (not consistent with a temporary stay), the money (assets and financial situation) or where funds came from (origin of these funds). Read the letter for which of the three it relies on; the answer is different for each. The Canada visitor visa refusal reasons page explains the grounds in plain language.
Have a refusal letter in front of you? Clients email their documents, and the review takes place by video call, phone call or in person at the Vadodara office. There is no charge for the review of a refusal: IndoWorld experts read the letter and compare it with the application that was refused. You can start on the visitor / tourist visa refusal letter review page.
