What the official guidance says an applicant like this must show
This is general guidance from official UK government sources for a parent visiting a child who is studying in the UK on a Standard Visitor visa (the visitor / tourist visa route). It is not a description of the case above.
- Visiting family is a permitted purpose. The Standard Visitor page lists seeing family or friends among the permitted activities. The Home Office still expects evidence that the visitor will leave at the end of the visit and can pay for the trip (see the supporting documents guide).
- If the child is paying or hosting. The guide says to show what support is being given and whether it covers dependent family, how it is given, that the supporter has enough funds for themselves and their dependants, the relationship between you, and that the supporter is legally in the UK, for example through a British passport or residence document.
- The rule behind it. Appendix V (V 4.3) allows a third party to provide travel, maintenance or accommodation only if they have a genuine professional or personal relationship with the applicant, are not in breach of immigration laws, and can and will provide support for the whole stay.
- Do not show only the UK side. The caseworker guidance lists the applicant’s own financial circumstances and personal and economic ties to the country of residence among the factors, and gives, as a reason for doubt, few family and economic ties at home alongside several family members in the UK.
- Make the accounts agree. The same guidance flags discrepancies between what the applicant says and what the sponsor says, particularly on points the sponsor could reasonably be expected to know. Dates, address, who pays and for how long should read the same in the parent’s form and the child’s letter.
- Details the form asks for. The application asks where you will stay, the expected cost, and the name, address and passport number of any family members you have in the UK.

If your application was refused: what to look for in the letter
Where a refusal concerns a parent visiting a child, look for whether the letter says the notice does not show what other family you have in your country of residence, refers to economic ties that would necessitate your departure, or points to a discrepancy between your documents and your stated circumstances. Each of those can be checked against the home-country papers and the host’s papers separately. The UK visitor visa refusal reasons page covers the common grounds in plain language.
Have a refusal letter in front of you? You can email it and go through it with IndoWorld experts on a video call, a phone call or in person at the Vadodara office. They read the letter and compare it with the application that was refused, and there is no charge for the review of a refusal. See how to get your visitor / tourist visa refusal letter reviewed.
