What the official guidance says an applicant like this must show
This is general guidance from official UK government sources for a retired applicant visiting family in the UK on a Standard Visitor visa (the visitor / tourist visa). It is not a description of the case above.
- Income that is not a salary. The supporting documents guide is written around evidence of funds: bank statements that detail the origin of the funds held are its first example. For a pensioner, pension credits and savings built up over time therefore need to be visible in the statements submitted.
- No set level of funds. The caseworker guidance says there is no set level. Income or savings, less commitments such as rent or mortgage and any dependants the applicant supports, must meet the likely costs of the trip and be reasonable in light of the applicant’s circumstances.
- Recent savings draw questions. The guidance says that where most of the funds have not been held in the account for long, the origin of the money may be checked further.
- Family paying part of the cost. Under Appendix V (V 4.3) a third party can provide travel, maintenance or accommodation if the relationship is genuine, they are not in breach of immigration laws and they can and will support the visitor for the whole stay. If support is not declared on the form and the funds cannot be shown to be genuinely the applicant’s, the guidance says they should not be counted.
- Ties at home still count. Personal and economic ties to the country of residence are listed among the assessment factors, and the guidance gives as a reason for doubt few family and economic ties at home with several family members in the UK. Property, family, regular income and commitments at home are the usual evidence.
- Keep to recent paper. The guide lists bank statements or letters issued more than a year before the application among documents it says are less useful.

If your application was refused: what to look for in the letter
If a retired applicant’s file was refused, look for sentences about the statement not matching declared income and spending (see that wording), about not demonstrating the origin of funds, or about economic ties. Each can be answered by laying out the pension, savings and property documents against what the application form declared. The UK visitor visa refusal reasons page explains these grounds further.
Have a refusal letter in front of you? Clients email their documents, and the review takes place by video call, phone call or in person at the Vadodara office. There is no charge for the review of a refusal: IndoWorld experts read the letter and compare it with the application that was refused. You can start on the visitor / tourist visa refusal letter review page.
