WHAT THIS DEMONSTRATES

What This Case Demonstrates

This case illustrates why self-employment income needs a clear, traceable link to bank activity in a Standard Visitor application. See the IndoWorld Evidence Integrity Framework for more on this reasoning.

Our self-employed applicant visa preparation guide goes further into presenting business income when there is no salary slip. The main UK visitor visa page covers the complete route, and small-business owners in Gujarat can start with our Gujarat UK visitor visa page.

OFFICIAL GUIDANCE

What the official guidance says an applicant like this must show

This is general guidance from official UK government sources for a self-employed applicant planning a holiday in the UK on a Standard Visitor visa, the visa often called a tourist visa. It does not describe the case above.

  • Tourism is permitted; running a business is not. The Standard Visitor page lists tourism as a permitted activity. Appendix V (V 4.4) says a visitor must not intend to work in the UK, including by establishing or running a business as a self-employed person.
  • Show the business as it is at home. The supporting documents guide suggests business registration documents or recent invoices that confirm on-going self-employment, and asks that financial documents clearly show you have access to the funds.
  • Origin of funds. Bank statements that detail the origin of the funds held are the guide’s lead example. Business income paid into a personal account should be traceable in the statements submitted.
  • Plans. The caseworker guidance says visa applicants are not required to provide an itinerary, but are normally expected to have some plans and to give information about them on the form.
  • Commitments and ties. The guidance says the funds to be relied on are income or savings minus ongoing commitments, and lists personal and economic ties to the country of residence as an assessment factor. For a business owner, the business itself is part of that picture.
  • Accuracy. The application asks for annual earnings, expected trip cost and, depending on circumstances, 10 years of travel history; the figures should match the documents.

IF YOUR APPLICATION WAS REFUSED

If your application was refused: what to look for in the letter

If a self-employed applicant has been refused, look for sentences on whether the self-employment is settled and established in your home country, whether the funds’ origin is demonstrated, and whether economic ties would bring you back. Match each against the business papers and statements you sent. The UK visitor visa refusal reasons guide covers the grounds in context.

Have a refusal letter in front of you? IndoWorld experts read it and compare it with the application that was refused. Documents are sent by email, the review is held by video call, phone call or at the Vadodara office, and there is no charge for the review of a refusal. Start from the refusal letter review page.
