APPLICANT SITUATION

The Applicant’s Situation

The applicant planned to visit an extended family member in the United States, a relationship that needed to be explained clearly since it was not an immediate-family connection.

INITIAL ASSESSMENT

What the Assessment Identified

The initial review found that the applicant needed a simple, natural way to describe the family relationship and the reason for the visit, without over-complicating it.

FOCUS AREA

Key Focus of This Case

Preparing a clear, natural explanation of the family relationship and purpose of the visit for the interview.

CASE-HANDLING WORK

What IndoWorld Actually Did

  • Reviewed the family relationship and how to describe it clearly
  • Completed and reviewed the DS-160 form
  • Conducted mock interview practice on the purpose of the visit and the relationship
  • Practiced keeping the explanation brief and natural
EVIDENCE CONSIDERED

Evidence and Documentation Considered

This case centered on the DS-160 form and interview preparation rather than an extensive supporting-document package, consistent with how B1/B2 visitor visa applications are typically assessed.

PROCESS STAGE

Where This Case Reached

The DS-160 was completed and reviewed, and interview preparation on the family relationship was conducted.

WHAT THIS DEMONSTRATES

What This Case Demonstrates

This case shows why an extended-family visit benefits from a simple, clearly explained relationship rather than an over-detailed account. See the IndoWorld Application Intelligence Framework for more on this reasoning.

OFFICIAL GUIDANCE

What the Official Guidance Says an Applicant Like This Must Show

This is general guidance for a B-1/B-2 visitor (tourist and business) visa application to visit relatives in the United States. It is not a detail of the case above.

  • Tourism or social visits to relatives or friends are B-2 “visitor for pleasure” activities (9 FAM 402.2-4).
  • The applicant still has to show a residence abroad that is not being abandoned and a temporary, limited stay, however close the relative is (9 FAM 402.2-2).
  • The Manual says offering to leave a child, spouse or other dependant at home does not by itself settle doubts about intent to return, so the ties explanation should rest on the applicant’s own life at home (9 FAM 402.2-2).
  • Plans must be specific and realistic for the entire visit, with arrangements for paying for the stay and the return that are adequate to prevent unlawful employment (9 FAM 402.2-2).
  • The Department’s ties wording lists family and social links among the ties to the home country (9 FAM 403.10-3).
  • Residence abroad means the applicant’s principal, actual dwelling place, so the home address, household and daily responsibilities in India are what the officer weighs against the relative’s home in the United States (9 FAM 402.2-2).
REFUSAL LETTER

If Your Application Was Refused: What to Look for in the Letter

If a family-visit application was refused, find out whether the letter relies on the ties sentence or on the category sentence. The ties row and category row of the refusal letter wording guide set the two side by side, and the reapplication row shows what the Department says about a new application. Our USA visitor visa refusal reasons page and FAQs explain how relatives in the U.S. are usually considered.

Have a refusal letter in front of you? You can email it to IndoWorld. The experts read the letter and compare it with the application that was refused. The review of a refusal is done at no charge, by video call, phone call or in person at the Vadodara office. See how to get your visitor / tourist visa refusal letter reviewed.
