APPLICANT SITUATION

The Applicant’s Situation

The applicant ran a business and intended to combine a short business purpose with personal tourism during the same U.S. trip.

INITIAL ASSESSMENT

What the Assessment Identified

The initial review found that the applicant needed a clear, concise way to describe two purposes in one trip without the explanation sounding rehearsed or overloaded with detail.

FOCUS AREA

Key Focus of This Case

Preparing a short, clear description of the combined purpose that the applicant could explain naturally and consistently.

CASE-HANDLING WORK

What IndoWorld Actually Did

  • Reviewed the DS-160 form for accuracy across both stated purposes
  • Prepared a concise explanation of the business activity for interview use
  • Conducted mock interview questions distinguishing the business and tourism elements of the trip
  • Practiced keeping answers brief and specific rather than long-winded
EVIDENCE CONSIDERED

Evidence and Documentation Considered

This case centered on the DS-160 form and interview preparation rather than an extensive supporting-document package, consistent with how B1/B2 visitor visa applications are typically assessed.

PROCESS STAGE

Where This Case Reached

The DS-160 was completed and reviewed, and interview preparation addressing both stated purposes was conducted.

WHAT THIS DEMONSTRATES

What This Case Demonstrates

This case shows why a combined-purpose trip needs a simple, consistent explanation rather than an elaborate one, since clarity matters more than detail in a short interview. See the IndoWorld Application Intelligence Framework for more on this reasoning.

OFFICIAL GUIDANCE

What the Official Guidance Says an Applicant Like This Must Show

This is general guidance for a B-1/B-2 visitor (tourist and business) visa trip that combines a short business purpose with tourism. It is not a detail of the case above.

  • B-1 covers business activity that is not employment, such as consulting with business associates, negotiating contracts or attending conferences; it generally does not cover skilled or unskilled labour (9 FAM 402.2-5).
  • Tourism and social visits are B-2 “visitor for pleasure” activities (9 FAM 402.2-4), and the Manual allows a visitor to seek admission for legitimate business or pleasure, so each purpose should be described plainly and truthfully (9 FAM 402.2-2).
  • The applicant must have specific and realistic plans for the whole visit, and payment arrangements for the stay and the return must be adequate to prevent unlawful employment (9 FAM 402.2-2). A self-employed applicant should be ready to say how the business supports the trip.
  • The refusal letter text itself names the kinds of tie that matter: professional, work, school, family or social links to the home country (9 FAM 403.10-3).
  • Fraud or wilful misrepresentation of a material fact to obtain a visa is a separate ground of ineligibility, so both purposes must be stated accurately on the form (INA 212(a)(6)(C)(i)).
REFUSAL LETTER

If Your Application Was Refused: What to Look for in the Letter

When a combined business and tourism trip is refused, the letter may say the applicant did not show ties, or that the intended activities did not fit the visa category. These are different findings. Compare your letter with the ties row and the category row of the refusal letter wording guide, which also shows where the Department says the decision cannot be appealed but a new application may be made. For the full list of concerns see our USA visitor visa refusal reasons page, and for paperwork see supporting documents.

Have a refusal letter in front of you? You can email it to IndoWorld. The experts read the letter and compare it with the application that was refused. The review of a refusal is done at no charge, by video call, phone call or in person at the Vadodara office. See how to get your visitor / tourist visa refusal letter reviewed.
