This case shows why a business-purpose Schengen application needs specific, verifiable evidence of the meeting itself. See the IndoWorld Application Intelligence Framework for more on this reasoning.

Self-employed applicants can read our self-employed applicant visa preparation guide on tying a trip’s purpose to real business activity. The Schengen tourist visa page covers short-stay requirements more broadly, and business owners in Gujarat can start from our Gujarat Schengen visa page.

OFFICIAL GUIDANCE

What the Official Guidance Says an Applicant Like This Must Show

This is general guidance for a self-employed applicant travelling to a Schengen country for a business meeting, taken from the EU Visa Code. It is not a detail of the case above.

  • For business trips, Annex II lists an invitation from a firm or authority to attend meetings, conferences or events connected with trade, industry or work, documents showing trade or work relations, entry tickets for fairs and congresses, and documents proving the company’s business activities and the applicant’s employment status in it (Visa Code, Annex II).
  • The applicant must present documents indicating the purpose of the journey and information enabling an assessment of the intention to leave before the visa expires (Visa Code, Art. 14(1)).
  • Annex II also lists, for intention to leave, a return or round-trip booking, proof of financial means in the country of residence, proof of employment, real estate and family ties (Visa Code, Annex II).
  • Sufficient means of subsistence for the stay and the return must be shown, and are assessed against average budget board and lodging prices multiplied by the days of stay (Visa Code, Art. 21(5)).
  • Where the trip goes to one country only, that Member State is the one that decides the application (Visa Code, Art. 5), and valid travel medical insurance with minimum cover of EUR 30,000 is required (Art. 15).
REFUSAL LETTER

If Your Application Was Refused: What to Look for in the Letter

If a business-trip application was refused, compare the ticked reasons with reason 2 (justification for the purpose), reason 10 (information not reliable), reason 11 (reliability of statements) and reason 12 (authenticity of documents) of the refusal letter wording guide; each has a different meaning. The guide also quotes the Court of Justice ruling on reasonable doubt. For further reading see Schengen tourist visa refusal reasons and the cover letter page.

Have a refusal letter in front of you? You can email it to IndoWorld. The experts read the letter and compare it with the application that was refused. The review of a refusal is done at no charge, by video call, phone call or in person at the Vadodara office. See how to get your visitor / tourist visa refusal letter reviewed.
