The Applicant’s Situation

Where This Case Reached
The reapplication was prepared and submitted to the relevant consulate for decision.
What This Case Demonstrates
This case shows why incomplete insurance or itinerary details usually reflect a fixable documentation gap. See the IndoWorld Refusal-to-Remedy Framework for more on this reasoning.

What the Official Guidance Says an Applicant Like This Must Show
This is general guidance for someone reapplying for a Schengen short-stay (tourist) visa after an earlier refusal that cited insurance and itinerary problems, taken from the EU Visa Code. It is not a detail of the case above.
- A visa must be refused if the applicant does not provide proof of adequate and valid travel medical insurance where applicable (Visa Code, Art. 32(1)(a)(vii)).
- The insurance must be valid throughout the Member States’ territory, cover the entire intended stay, and provide at least EUR 30,000 of cover; consulates also check that claims against the insurer would be recoverable in a Member State (Visa Code, Art. 15).
- The competent Member State is determined by the destination: sole destination, otherwise main destination by days of stay or purpose, otherwise the State whose external border the applicant intends to cross to enter (Visa Code, Art. 5). A clear single-main-destination itinerary supports that decision.
- For a family visit, Annex II lists an invitation from the host and accommodation documents, plus proof of family ties with the host; a Member State may require a sponsorship or private-accommodation form (Visa Code, Annex II and Art. 14(4)).
- A refusal is notified on the standard Annex VI form with its reasons, so the reapplication can be checked against the boxes that were ticked (Visa Code, Art. 32(2)).
If Your Application Was Refused: What to Look for in the Letter
Start by reading which boxes are ticked on the Annex VI form. Reason 16 in the refusal letter wording guide covers travel medical insurance and reason 2 covers the purpose and conditions of the stay; neither one says what exactly was missing, which is why the application that was refused has to be read alongside the form. The appeal box row shows what the form says about the right of appeal. Our Schengen tourist visa refusal reasons page, FAQs and financial requirements page help with a reapplication.
