Canada PR Case: Self-Employed Professional, Work-Experience Evidence
A representative case involving a self-employed professional organizing work-experience evidence for an Express Entry application.
Applicant names and identifying details have been withheld or generalized to protect client confidentiality. This case study describes the type of application work handled by IndoWorld and the preparation approach used, without disclosing personally identifying information or a specific visa decision. This is a representative, anonymized case study. It is not a real client experience and does not describe a documented client outcome; for published client stories, see Client Experiences.
At a Glance
The Applicant’s Situation
The applicant had been self-employed in a skilled occupation and needed to document that experience for Express Entry, which usually calls for different evidence from employment with an employer.
What the Assessment Identified
The initial review found that self-employment experience needed additional supporting evidence beyond a simple declaration, such as contracts and client records.
Key Focus of This Case
Assembling contract, invoice, and tax evidence that credibly demonstrated the duration and nature of the self-employed work.
What IndoWorld Actually Did
- Reviewed available contracts, invoices, and client records
- Organized tax filings supporting the self-employment period
- Prepared a written summary of the applicant’s self-employed duties
- Reviewed the National Occupational Classification match for the self-employed role
Evidence and Documentation Considered
- Contracts and invoices
- Tax filings
- Client correspondence
Where This Case Reached
This representative case does not state an invitation to apply, a filing date or a decision outcome. It describes the evidence-documentation work shown above.
What This Case Illustrates
This case illustrates why self-employed work experience needs more layers of independent evidence than a standard employer reference. See the IndoWorld Evidence Integrity Framework for more on this reasoning.
Our self-employed applicant visa preparation guide goes further into contracts, invoices and tax records as evidence of independent work. The complete route is on the Canada permanent residency page, and self-employed professionals across Gujarat can reach us through our Canada PR consultant in Gujarat page.
What This Case Does Not Prove
This is a representative, anonymized case, not a record of a real client file or a real client experience. It is not evidence of approval probability or a success rate, and it is not a guarantee of any outcome for another applicant. Invitations, nominations and permanent residence decisions are made by IRCC or the province or territory concerned, and each application is assessed on its own facts and evidence.
- It does not show that self-employed experience will be accepted or counted for any applicant. That depends on the programme, whether the work was paid, and the evidence provided.
- It does not state which Express Entry programme the applicant used.
What the official guidance says an applicant like this must show
Self-employed experience is treated differently by the two main Express Entry programmes, so the official conditions are worth reading before any evidence is assembled. These points are general guidance from IRCC pages.
- Federal Skilled Worker Program. IRCC states that skilled work experience can count for selection-factor points when it was gained while self-employed. IRCC: Federal Skilled Worker Program ↗
- Canadian Experience Class. IRCC states that self-employment cannot be counted for this programme (with a limited exception for some physicians). IRCC: Canadian Experience Class ↗
- The same skilled-work conditions apply. The work must be paid (wages or commission, not volunteer or unpaid work), match the NOC chosen as primary occupation, show the lead statement and most main duties were performed, fall in the last 10 years, and total one year continuous or 1,560 hours. IRCC: Federal Skilled Worker Program ↗
- Proof. IRCC names a reference or experience letter from an employer as an example of proof of work experience. IRCC: documents to have ready ↗ A self-employed applicant has no employer letter, so the evidence needs to establish the same facts: the role, duties, duration and that the work was paid.
- Accuracy. IRCC states that false information or left-out details can lead to refusal, inadmissibility and a five-year bar. IRCC: create your profile ↗
If your application was refused – what to look for in the letter
If a refusal or rejection letter mentions work experience, check whether the officer questioned the NOC match, the duration, the hours, or whether the work was paid, since each calls for different documents. Check also which programme the experience was assessed under. IRCC says a new profile is needed to be considered again (IRCC: after you apply ↗). Our self-employed applicant preparation guide and Canada PR documents required pages cover evidence in more detail, and earlier visa refusals should be declared wherever the forms ask.
Have a refusal letter in front of you?
If an earlier application of yours was refused, you can email the letter and the application documents to IndoWorld. IndoWorld experts read the letter and compare it with the application that was refused. The review can be done by video call, phone call or in person at the Vadodara office, and there is no charge for the review of a refusal. Get your refusal letter reviewed.
Official Source
This case relates to requirements set by IRCC — Express Entry. IndoWorld’s role is practical preparation and guidance; visa and immigration decisions are made solely by the relevant government authority.
IRCC treats self-employment differently by programme. Under the Federal Skilled Worker Program, self-employed experience can count towards selection-factor points; under the Canadian Experience Class it generally cannot be counted, with a limited exception for certain physicians. Work must be paid and in an eligible NOC TEER category (0, 1, 2 or 3).
