At a Glance
The Applicant’s Situation
An Indian applicant planned to visit family in Canada with financial support from a host while also having some personal funds.
The application needed to distinguish the host’s commitment from the applicant’s own financial circumstances and avoid overstating either.
What the Assessment Identified
The purpose and length of the visit, the host’s ability and stated support, the applicant’s funds and the applicant’s personal circumstances were reviewed together.
Key Focus of This Case
Presenting the host’s support and the applicant’s own funds as two accurately described parts of one funding plan.
What IndoWorld Actually Did
- Reviewed the purpose and length of the visit, the host’s ability and stated support, the applicant’s funds and personal circumstances together
- Presented the proposed funding arrangement clearly
- Tied each document to the person and the expense it actually related to
Evidence and Documentation Considered
- Purpose and length of the visit
- The host’s ability and stated support
- The applicant’s own funds
- The applicant’s personal circumstances
Where This Case Reached
The funding arrangement was set out clearly, with each document linked to the person and expense it related to.
What This Case Demonstrates
Sponsorship and personal funds should be described accurately; a sponsor’s willingness alone does not determine the application. IndoWorld gives an honest read of how much weight each part of a funding plan can carry before an application is filed. IndoWorld’s guidance follows the guidelines IRCC publishes on its website; the decision on every application rests with IRCC. See the IndoWorld Evidence Integrity Framework for more on this reasoning.
The Canada visitor visa invitation letter page and the proof of funds page cover the two halves of this scenario. The sibling case on a sponsor-supported parent visit is a related example.
What the official guidance says an applicant like this must show
This is general guidance from IRCC and Canadian law for an applicant visiting a host in Canada and applying for a Canada visitor visa (the temporary resident visa, often called a tourist visa in everyday use). It does not describe the case above.
- The letter of invitation. IRCC says it sometimes asks for a letter of invitation, and that the letter should say how the visitor will pay for expenses, along with the host’s details and proof of the host’s status (IRCC: letter of invitation). Applicants must also show their relationship to an inviting family member (IRCC: how to apply).
- A letter does not decide the case. IRCC states that a letter of invitation does not promise a visa and that officers assess the visitor, not the letter (IRCC: letter of invitation).
- The host must mean it. The writer must tell the truth and plan to keep the promises made in the letter (IRCC: letter of invitation).
- Money for the stay. The amount needed depends on the length of stay and on whether you stay in a hotel or with friends or relatives (IRCC: eligibility).
- The applicant’s own ties. The applicant must still convince the officer of ties such as a job, home, financial assets or family that will take them back home (IRCC: eligibility).
- Accuracy. Answers must be truthful and complete (IRPA section 16), and misrepresentation is a ground of inadmissibility (IRPA section 40), so neither the host’s means nor the applicant’s own funds should be overstated.

If your application was refused: what to look for in the letter
If your letter or officer decision note turns on funds, compare it with has not submitted enough supporting documents to satisfy me that the applicant has access to sufficient funds and assets and financial situation insufficient for the stated purpose. Where family is the purpose, officers also weigh ties on both sides, so look at the family ties abroad row and the family ties in Canada row. Then check whether the host’s support and your own funds were each described accurately in the file. The Canada visitor visa refusal reasons guide explains the common grounds.
Have a refusal letter in front of you? Clients email their documents, and the review takes place by video call, phone call or in person at the Vadodara office. There is no charge for the review of a refusal: IndoWorld experts read the letter and compare it with the application that was refused. You can start on the visitor / tourist visa refusal letter review page.
