WHAT THIS DEMONSTRATES

What This Case Demonstrates

This case shows why retirement income needs a clear explanation when demonstrating means of subsistence. See the IndoWorld Application Intelligence Framework for more on this reasoning.

OFFICIAL GUIDANCE

What the Official Guidance Says an Applicant Like This Must Show

This is general guidance for a retired applicant on a first Schengen short-stay (tourist) visa application, taken from the EU Visa Code. It is not a detail of the case above.

  • The applicant must show sufficient means of subsistence for the stay and for the return, or be in a position to acquire such means lawfully (Visa Code, Art. 14(1)(c)).
  • Means are assessed by the length and purpose of the stay against average prices for board and lodging in budget accommodation in the Member States concerned, multiplied by the days of stay; proof of sponsorship or private accommodation can also count (Visa Code, Art. 21(5)).
  • For intention to leave, Annex II lists a return or round-trip booking, proof of financial means in the country of residence, real estate and proof of integration such as family ties (Visa Code, Annex II).
  • For tourism, Annex II lists accommodation documents and documents about the itinerary (Visa Code, Annex II).
  • Travel medical insurance must cover the whole stay in the Schengen territory with minimum cover of EUR 30,000 (Visa Code, Art. 15).
REFUSAL LETTER

If Your Application Was Refused: What to Look for in the Letter

If a retired applicant’s Schengen application was refused for money reasons, reason 3 (sufficient means of subsistence) and reason 4 (lawfully acquire means) in the refusal letter wording guide are different findings: one is about the amount shown, the other about where it comes from. Reason 13 is about the intention to leave. Our Schengen tourist visa refusal reasons page and the eligibility page show how each is read.

Have a refusal letter in front of you? You can email it to IndoWorld. The experts read the letter and compare it with the application that was refused. The review of a refusal is done at no charge, by video call, phone call or in person at the Vadodara office. See how to get your visitor / tourist visa refusal letter reviewed.
