The EU Blue Card is Germany's primary work and residence permit for highly qualified non-EU professionals. Indian nationals with a recognised university degree and a qualifying job offer can apply. Here's exactly what you need to qualify.

1. University Degree (Recognised in Germany)

You must hold a university degree (Bachelor's or higher) that is officially recognised in Germany. Use the anabin database (anabin.kmk.org) to check your institution's status — it must be rated H+ for automatic recognition. Indian universities from the IITs, NITs, IIMs, and many central and state universities are recognised, but recognition is per-institution, not per-country. If your degree is not H+, you must apply for a formal recognition decision (Anerkennung).

2. Job Offer from a German Employer

A binding employment contract or concrete job offer is mandatory before applying. The job must be in a field related to your degree — a software engineer degree holder cannot use a Blue Card to work as a restaurant manager.

A valid police clearance certificate is required. For Indian nationals, this means both an Indian police clearance certificate and a German police clearance certificate (for applicants who have previously lived in Germany).

Shortage Occupations — Who Gets the Lower Salary Threshold?

Germany designates certain occupations as "shortage occupations" — these are fields where there are more vacancies than qualified candidates. These include:
