Core Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the Germany Opportunity Card, you must meet ALL of the following basic requirements:
- Hold a foreign professional qualification — either a vocational training certificate (minimum 2 years) or a university degree recognised by a competent authority
- Score at least 6 points under the points-based system, OR hold a qualification formally recognised as equivalent to a German vocational qualification (in which case only 4 points are needed)
- Demonstrate sufficient financial resources to support yourself during your stay without public funds
- Have valid health insurance coverage for the full duration of stay
- Hold a valid passport with at least 6 months validity beyond the intended stay
- Possess a clean criminal record in both India and Germany
- Not be subject to any entry ban or previous deportation order from Germany or Schengen area
- Intend to seek employment in a skilled occupation in Germany
Points-Based Scoring System
The Chancenkarte uses a points system. Most applicants from India need a minimum of 6 points. If your qualification is formally recognised as equivalent to a German vocational qualification, you need only 4 points from the criteria below.

Important: A2 German is the minimum language requirement that awards points. You do not need German language skills to apply, but without language points you must score 6 points from the other criteria — which is difficult unless your partner is also relocating.
Qualification Requirements in Detail
Option A: Recognised Qualification (Easier Path)
If your Indian degree or diploma is formally recognised as equivalent to a German vocational qualification or university degree, you qualify for the Opportunity Card with just 4 points from additional criteria. Recognised qualifications include:
- University degrees (B.Tech, B.Sc, M.Tech, M.Sc, MBA, MBBS, BDS, etc.) from recognised Indian universities — many are accepted after credential evaluation via anabin database or by ANABIN/ZAB
- Vocational training diplomas equivalent to German Ausbildung (minimum 2 years of structured training)
- Professional licences in regulated professions (nursing, medicine, engineering) once verified
Option B: Non-Recognised Qualification (Points Route)
If your qualification is not formally recognised or comparable to a German standard, you still qualify if you can score 6 or more points from the criteria table above. This typically means:
- B2 German + age under 35 = 3 points (still need 3 more — very difficult without other criteria)
- B2 German + age under 35 + relocating spouse + prior Germany stay = 5 points (not enough)
- A practical route: Get your qualification assessed/recognised before applying — it simplifies the process significantly
Financial Proof Requirements
You must prove you can financially support yourself during your 1-year job search in Germany without relying on German public funds. Accepted evidence includes:
- Blocked account (Sperrkonto) with a German bank such as Deutsche Bank or Fintiba showing €13,092 for the year (€1,091/month) — approximately ₹14.6 lakh, per the current BAföG reference rate. This is the most reliable option, accepted by all German consulates.
- Proof of sufficient regular income from abroad that can be transferred to Germany
- Formal financial guarantee (Verpflichtungserklärung) from a German resident willing to support you
A blocked account (Sperrkonto) is the most recommended option for Indian applicants. It shows the German consulate that funds are secured and releases €333/month during your stay.

Important Notes
The Opportunity Card is NOT a work visa. It allows you to enter Germany to look for a job. Once you find employment, your employer must support your transition to a formal work permit (Arbeitserlaubnis or EU Blue Card).
Part-time work is allowed — up to 20 hours per week while you job hunt. Trial work (Probearbeit) is also permitted for up to 2 weeks with any single employer.
Family members cannot join on this visa. Spouses and dependants cannot accompany you on the Opportunity Card. Only after you secure a job and convert to a work visa can family reunification begin.
The Opportunity Card cannot be extended. It is valid for 1 year only. If you find a job, you transition to a work permit before expiry. If you do not find a job, you must leave Germany.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Assuming any degree qualifies: Not all Indian degrees are automatically recognised as equivalent to German qualifications. Check the anabin database or consult IndoWorld Visa before applying.
Underestimating the financial proof requirement: Many applicants submit bank statements with insufficient balance or unstable transaction history. German consulates are strict about this — use a blocked account.
Confusing A1 and A2 German: Only A2 or higher German language scores earn points. A1 level does not qualify.
Applying without enough points: Carefully calculate your points before submitting. Many Indian applicants need to pass a Goethe-Institut exam first to hit the required total.
Expecting to bring family: Spouses and children cannot accompany you on the Opportunity Card. Plan accordingly before applying.
