Germany Opportunity Card

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything Indian professionals need to know about the Chancenkarte (GOC)

What is the Germany Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte)?

The Chancenkarte is a points-based job-seeker visa introduced in June 2024 that allows qualified Indian professionals to enter Germany for up to 1 year to search for employment without a prior job offer. You can also work part-time (an average of up to 20 hours/week) while searching.

How many points do I need for the Opportunity Card?

It depends on your route. Direct route: if your foreign qualification is fully recognised in Germany, you count as a skilled worker and need no points and no language certificate. Points route: you must hold a degree or at least 2-year vocational qualification recognised in India, have German at A1 or English at B2, prove financial means, and score at least 6 points. Points: partial recognition in Germany (4), shortage occupation (1), related experience of 5 years in the last 7 (3) or 2 years in the last 5 (2), German B2+ (3), B1 (2) or A2 (1), English C1+ (1), age 35 or under (2) or 36–40 (1), 6+ months' previous legal stay in Germany in the last 5 years (1), and a qualifying spouse or partner who also applies (1).

Which Indian qualifications are accepted?

For the points route, a university degree or vocational training of at least 2 years recognised by the Indian state authority is required. For the direct route, the qualification must be fully recognised in Germany. Use anabin — Germany's official database for checking foreign qualifications — as a first check: an H+ institution plus a degree listed as comparable points towards the direct route. Where anabin is unclear, a Statement of Comparability from the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB) confirms it; vocational qualifications go through a formal recognition procedure.

Is German language required to apply?

No. On the direct route no language certificate is required. On the points route you need either German at A1 or English at B2 as a minimum. German then earns points (A2 = 1, B1 = 2, B2 or higher = 3), and English C1 or higher earns 1. Practically, German greatly helps the job search, since many employers expect it even in technical roles. Check your mission's list of accepted certificates (e.g. Goethe-Institut, telc).

Can I work while on the Opportunity Card?

Yes — part-time work of up to an average of 20 hours per week is permitted. You can also do trial employment (Probebeschäftigung) with a potential employer for up to 2 weeks per employer. Full-time employment requires switching to a skilled-worker residence permit or EU Blue Card once you have a qualifying job.

How long is the GOC valid? Can it be extended?

The GOC is issued for up to 1 year for job search. If you find qualified employment but do not yet meet the requirements for another residence title, a follow-up Opportunity Card of up to 2 years is possible. The usual goal is to switch to a skilled-worker permit or EU Blue Card once you have a qualifying job. Pre-departure preparation (job applications, contacts, language skills) is therefore very important.

What is the difference between the GOC and the Germany Blue Card?

The GOC is for job-seekers (no job offer needed, 1 year to search, part-time work only). The Blue Card is for employed professionals who have a concrete job offer meeting Germany's minimum salary threshold (€50,700/year general; €45,934 for shortage occupations, thresholds). A successful GOC application typically leads to Blue Card conversion.

How much money do I need to show (financial requirement)?

You must prove funds sufficient for 1 year in Germany — currently €1,091/month × 12 = €13,092/year. This blocked-account figure updates annually, so always confirm the current amount on Germany's official Make it in Germany portal before funding your account. The most accepted method is a blocked account (Sperrkonto) from an approved provider. Funds in the blocked account are released monthly during your stay.

How long does the GOC visa application take from India?

Total timeline is typically 3–5 months: 4–8 weeks to get a German Consulate appointment in India (Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi), plus 8–12 weeks of consulate processing time. Apply well in advance, ensure all documents are complete, and book your appointment as early as possible.

What happens if I don't find a job within 1 year?

If you have not found qualified employment and hold no other residence title, you must leave Germany when the card expires. The follow-up card applies only to holders who have found qualified work. Before travelling, prepare interview prospects, a German-format CV (Lebenslauf) and your language skills so you use the year well.

Is the GOC only for IT professionals?

No. The GOC is open to any qualified professional who meets the requirements, whatever the field — IT, engineering, healthcare, skilled trades, finance and more. A qualification in an occupation Germany lists as a shortage occupation earns 1 extra point on the points route, but it is not a condition.

Is there an age limit for the Opportunity Card?

There is no age limit. Age only affects points on the points route: 35 or under earns 2 points, and over 35 up to 40 earns 1 point. Older applicants can reach 6 points through recognition, related experience, language skills or a previous stay in Germany — or use the direct route if their qualification is fully recognised.

Can I bring my spouse and children to Germany on the GOC?

The Opportunity Card covers only the holder, so family members need their own residence title. A spouse or partner who also meets the Opportunity Card requirements can apply for their own card, and one of you then earns 1 extra point. For other family options, check with the German mission; family reunification is usually simpler once you switch to a skilled-worker permit or Blue Card.

Is health insurance required for the Opportunity Card?

Yes. You must have valid health insurance coverage for your entire stay in Germany. Options include: international travel health insurance valid in Germany (for the visa application), or German public/private health insurance (after arrival). Once working, you will be enrolled in the German statutory health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung) automatically.
