What is the Germany Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte)?

The Chancenkarte is a points-based job-seeker visa introduced in June 2024 that allows qualified Indian professionals to enter Germany for up to 1 year to search for employment without a prior job offer. You can also work part-time (up to 20 hours/week) while searching.

How many points do I need for the Opportunity Card?

You need a minimum of 6 points. Alternatively, if your foreign qualification is formally recognized as equivalent to a German degree or vocational certificate, you qualify directly without needing points. Points are awarded for: German language skills (B1=1pt, B2=2pts, C1=3pts), age under 35 (1pt), professional experience in Germany (1pt), and a qualifying spouse (1pt).

Which Indian qualifications are accepted?

Indian B.Tech, B.Sc, M.Tech, MCA and vocational training certificates from recognized universities typically qualify. Use the anabin database to verify your specific degree. An H+ rating means full equivalency (direct pathway). Degrees not listed may require a Statement of Comparability from the Central Office for Foreign Education (KMK).

Is German language required to apply?

German is not mandatory but earns points (B1=1, B2=2, C1=3). If your degree is recognized as equivalent, you can apply without German. However, B2-level German dramatically improves your job search success — most German employers prefer candidates with at least B2 even in IT. GOETHE-Institut and Telc certificates are accepted.

Can I work while on the Opportunity Card?

Yes — up to 20 hours per week of part-time work is permitted. You can also do "trial work" (Probearbeit) with a potential employer for up to 2 weeks per employer. Full-time employment is only allowed after you convert your GOC to a work visa or Blue Card upon receiving a qualifying job offer.

How long is the GOC valid? Can it be extended?

The GOC is valid for 1 year and cannot be extended. You must either find a job and convert to a work permit within this period, or return to India. This makes pre-departure preparation (job applications, contacts, language skills) extremely important.

What is the difference between the GOC and the Germany Blue Card?

The GOC is for job-seekers (no job offer needed, 1 year to search, part-time work only). The Blue Card is for employed professionals who have a concrete job offer meeting Germany's minimum salary threshold (€50,700/year general; €45,934 for shortage occupations, thresholds). A successful GOC application typically leads to Blue Card conversion.

How much money do I need to show (financial requirement)?

You must prove funds sufficient for 1 year in Germany — currently €1,091/month × 12 = €13,092/year (roughly ₹14.6 lakh). This blocked-account figure updates annually, so always confirm the current amount before funding your account. The most accepted method is a blocked account (Sperrkonto) from providers like Coracle, Deutsche Bank India, or Expatrio. Funds in the blocked account are released monthly during your stay. How long does the GOC visa application take from India?

Total timeline is typically 3–5 months: 4–8 weeks to get a German Consulate appointment in India (Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi), plus 8–12 weeks of consulate processing time. Apply well in advance, ensure all documents are complete, and book your appointment as early as possible.

What happens if I don't find a job within 1 year?

You must leave Germany. The GOC cannot be extended. You may reapply in the future, but a failed job search reflects poorly. Before travelling, secure at least a few interview prospects, activate your LinkedIn, update your German-format CV (Lebenslauf), and ideally reach B2 German level.

Is the GOC only for IT professionals?

No. The GOC is open to any qualified professional in Germany's shortage sectors: IT/Software, Mechanical & Electrical Engineering, Healthcare (nurses, paramedics, medical technicians), Skilled Trades (electricians, plumbers, carpenters), Finance & Accounting, Architecture, and more. Any recognized degree in a shortage field qualifies.

Is there an age limit for the Opportunity Card?

There is no hard age limit. However, being under 35 earns 1 bonus point. Applicants over 35 can compensate through German language skills, recognized qualifications, or prior German work experience. Professionals up to their mid-50s have successfully obtained the GOC.

Can I bring my spouse and children to Germany on the GOC?

Family accompanying is not guaranteed with the GOC alone. Your spouse may apply for a dependent visa, but you must show sufficient funds for the entire family. A spouse who is also a qualified professional earns you 1 additional GOC point. Family reunification becomes significantly easier once you convert to a Blue Card or permanent work visa.

Is health insurance required for the Opportunity Card?

Yes. You must have valid health insurance coverage for your entire stay in Germany. Options include: international travel health insurance valid in Germany (for the visa application), or German public/private health insurance (after arrival). Once working, you will be enrolled in the German statutory health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung) automatically.
