Current Processing Time Estimates
The average Super Visa processing time is currently 8–12 weeks for online applications. Paper applications submitted at a Visa Application Centre typically take 12–16 weeks or longer. IRCC publishes updated processing times on their official website — always check there for the most current data before planning travel.
| Application Type | Typical Processing Time |
|---|---|
| Online application (standard) | 8–12 weeks |
| Paper/VAC application | 12–20 weeks |
| Applications with missing documents | Significantly longer |
| Peak seasons (Dec–Jan, May–Jun) | Add 4–8 extra weeks |
Factors That Affect Processing Time
Completeness of application: Missing documents are the single biggest cause of delays. A Request for Documents (RFD) letter from IRCC adds weeks to the timeline. Review the complete Super Visa documents checklist carefully before submitting.
Medical examination: IRCC may request a medical exam. This adds 2–4 weeks to processing. If you're over 65 or have a pre-existing medical condition, factor this in when planning.
Biometrics: If you haven't provided biometrics to Canada within the last 10 years, you will be asked to visit a VAC for biometric collection. This can add 2–4 weeks.
Background checks: All applicants undergo security screening. If additional checks are triggered, processing can extend by several months.
When to Apply
Apply at least 3–4 months before your intended travel date to Canada. If you are planning travel during peak holiday seasons (Diwali holidays, Christmas/New Year, summer), apply 5–6 months in advance.
How to Check Your Application Status
Track your application through the IRCC online portal using your application number and UCI (unique client identifier). Status updates include: Application Received, Biometrics Required, Medical Exam Required, Decision Made, and Passport Request.
How Long Is the Super Visa Valid?
Once approved, the Super Visa is stamped in your passport and valid for 10 years or until passport expiry (whichever is earlier). Each visit allows you to stay in Canada for up to 5 years at a time (extendable by 2 more years from inside Canada).
Super Visa vs. Regular Visitor Visa — Speed Comparison
A regular Canada visitor visa (Temporary Resident Visa) is processed in 4–6 weeks but only allows stays of up to 6 months per visit. The Super Visa takes longer but allows much longer stays. See the Super Visa eligibility guide to decide which is right for you.
