Canada Super Visa Financial Requirements — LICO Income Proof
What your child in Canada must earn, what documents to submit, and how to calculate family size
The host (your child or grandchild in Canada) must show that they meet IRCC's minimum necessary income for their family size. This is the main financial requirement for a Super Visa. The amount depends on family size and IRCC updates it, so this page explains how the requirement works instead of quoting a fixed figure, and no single amount applies to every family.
Minimum Necessary Income: What IRCC Asks For
IRCC publishes a table of the minimum necessary income by family size and updates it from time to time. We do not reproduce the table here so that this page does not go out of date: check the current table, including the date shown on it, on IRCC’s proof of financial support page for your exact family size before applying. IRCC describes two ways for the host to show income. First, the host’s total income (including a co-signer’s income, if applicable) meets or exceeds the minimum in either of the two tax years before the application is submitted, shown with a Canada Revenue Agency notice of assessment. Second, the host’s income in the year before applying is at least 75% of the minimum, in which case the applicant’s own income can be added to cover the remainder and IRCC asks for proof that the income will continue while the applicant is in Canada.
Family size is counted by IRCC: it includes the Super Visa applicants, the host, the host's spouse or common-law partner, dependent children of the host and partner, and any previously approved Super Visa applicants or sponsored persons whose undertaking is still in effect. If both parents are visiting, count each as an additional person.
How to Calculate Your Family Size
Example: Your son lives in Canada with his wife and 1 child (family of 3). Both you and your spouse (parents) are visiting = add 2 persons. Total family size = 5 persons. This is an illustration only: previously approved Super Visa applicants or sponsored persons can add to the count. Check the current minimum necessary income for your family size on the IRCC website.
Proof of Income Documents
- Notice of Assessment (NOA) from the Canada Revenue Agency: the document IRCC names for the two-year route, and its preferred document for the 75% route
- For the 75% route, IRCC also lists alternatives such as a T4 or T1 for the last tax year, pay stubs, an employer letter, bank statements, or proof of pension or rental income
- If the host is self-employed or has other income, check IRCC's page for the documents it accepts, or ask us to review the file before submission

How to Calculate Family Size
Count the host, the host's spouse or common-law partner, their dependent children, plus the visiting parent(s) or grandparent(s), and any previously approved Super Visa applicants or sponsored persons whose undertaking is still in effect. For example, if your Canadian daughter has a spouse and two children, her household is 4 people. If both parents are applying together, the family size becomes 6, unless earlier approvals add to the count. The host's invitation letter lists the people included in this calculation.
What Documents Prove Financial Eligibility?
The host's invitation letter must include proof that the host meets or exceeds the minimum necessary income and the list and number of people counted in the family size. Can Multiple Incomes Be Combined?
Sometimes. IRCC allows a co-signer's income to be included in the host's total income where applicable, and, under the 75% route, the applicant's own income can be added. IRCC sets the rules on who can be a co-signer and which documents are needed, so check IRCC’s page before relying on combined income.
What If the Inviting Person Doesn't Meet the Threshold?
If the host's income does not meet IRCC's requirement, the Super Visa application does not meet that condition and can be refused. Depending on the facts, the options may include waiting until the host qualifies, checking whether a co-signer or the 75% route applies, or considering a regular visitor visa, which is a separate application and generally allows shorter stays. Financial Requirements vs. Proof of Funds for the Visitor
Note that the minimum necessary income applies to the inviting Canadian resident, not to you as the visitor. IRCC's Super Visa page does not set a separate minimum bank balance for the visiting parent or grandparent. Officers can still ask for further documents and decide each application on its own facts, so keep your own financial and travel records organised in case they are requested.
