What This Case Demonstrates
This case shows why a multi-country Schengen trip needs a clearly identified main destination and a fully consistent itinerary. See the IndoWorld Application Intelligence Framework for more on this reasoning.
Our Schengen countries page is a useful reference when working out which country counts as the main destination. See the Schengen tourist visa page for the full route, and salaried travellers across Gujarat can find our remote process on the Schengen visa consultant in Gujarat page.
What the Official Guidance Says an Applicant Like This Must Show
This is general guidance for a first-time Schengen short-stay (tourist) visa applicant planning a trip through several countries, taken from the EU Visa Code. It is not a detail of the case above.
- The Member State that decides is the sole destination; if the trip has more than one destination it is the main destination by length of stay in days or by purpose of stay; if no main destination can be determined, it is the State whose external border the applicant intends to cross to enter (Visa Code, Art. 5). Our main destination rule page walks through this.
- The applicant presents documents on the purpose of the journey, on accommodation or the means to pay for it, on sufficient means of subsistence for the stay and the return, and information showing an intention to leave before the visa expires (Visa Code, Art. 14(1)).
- Annex II lists, for tourism, documents about accommodation (a hotel booking or host invitation) and about the itinerary, such as a booking for an organised trip or another document showing the planned travel (Visa Code, Annex II).
- Travel medical insurance must be valid throughout the Schengen territory, cover the whole stay, and have minimum cover of EUR 30,000 (Visa Code, Art. 15).
- Means of subsistence are assessed by duration and purpose of stay, by reference to average prices in the Member States concerned for board and lodging in budget accommodation, multiplied by the days of stay (Visa Code, Art. 21(5)).
If Your Application Was Refused: What to Look for in the Letter
A refusal after a multi-country trip may cite the purpose, means of subsistence, intention to leave or insurance reasons. Check the numbered boxes on the Annex VI form against reason 2 (purpose and conditions of stay), reason 3 (means of subsistence), reason 13 (intention to leave) and reason 16 (travel medical insurance) of the refusal letter wording guide. The appeal box row explains the time limit stated on the form. Our Schengen tourist visa refusal reasons page and documents required page continue from there.
Have a refusal letter in front of you? You can email it to IndoWorld. The experts read the letter and compare it with the application that was refused. The review of a refusal is done at no charge, by video call, phone call or in person at the Vadodara office. See how to get your visitor / tourist visa refusal letter reviewed.
