Opportunity Card Advice for Applicants Anywhere in Gujarat

Germany’s Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) gives a qualified person from outside the EU up to one year in Germany to look for skilled work. For someone in Gujarat, the hard part is rarely the form itself. It is working out which of the two eligibility routes applies, proving the qualification in a way German officials accept, arranging the financial proof, and arriving with a realistic plan for the job search.

IndoWorld Visa and Education Services works from Vadodara and prepares Opportunity Card files for applicants in every part of the state, most of it remotely. This page sets out how we look at a Gujarat profile before anyone pays for translations, language exams or a blocked account. For the programme basics, start with our Germany Opportunity Card guide; this page is about applying that knowledge to your own situation. For where to give biometrics and how to arrange police certificates, apostilles and medicals from Gujarat, see our guide: Applying for a visa from Gujarat.

TWO ROUTES

Direct Route or Points Route: Which One Is Yours?

The card has two separate doors, and the requirements behind each are different. Confusing them is the most common mistake we see in self-assessments.

✓
Direct route (skilled worker)
If your university degree or vocational qualification is fully recognised in Germany, for example a degree shown as comparable through anabin or a ZAB Statement of Comparability, or training formally recognised as equivalent, you count as a skilled worker. On this route there is no points test and no language certificate requirement for the card itself.
✓
Points route
If recognition is partial or not yet obtained, every basic requirement must be met first: a university degree or at least two years of vocational training recognised in India, German at A1 or English at B2, and proof of financial means. Only then do you need a minimum of 6 points.

Before building a points total, we check whether the direct route is already open to you. An applicant whose degree is fully comparable gains nothing, for eligibility purposes, from sitting an extra German exam, although German still helps in interviews later. Where recognition is uncertain, our Opportunity Card eligibility breakdown explains what each route asks for in more detail.

POINTS ROUTE

How a Points Total Is Actually Built

On the points route, the score comes from a fixed list of criteria set out in the German Residence Act. These are the values we work with, checked against the German missions’ current guidance:

✓
Partial recognition of your qualification in Germany: 4 points
✓
Qualification in an occupation Germany lists as a shortage occupation: 1 point
✓
Related work experience of 5 years within the last 7: 3 points (or 2 years within the last 5: 2 points)
✓
German at B2 or higher: 3 points, B1: 2 points, A2: 1 point
✓
English at C1 or higher: 1 point
✓
Age up to 35: 2 points; over 35 up to 40: 1 point
✓
At least 6 months’ uninterrupted legal stay in Germany in the last 5 years, not as a tourist: 1 point
✓
Spouse or partner who also qualifies and applies with you: 1 point for one of you

A worked example: a 29-year-old mechanical engineer with five and a half years of related work in the last seven years and an English C1 certificate reaches 2 + 3 + 1 = 6 points, provided the basic requirements are also met. Change one fact, such as experience in an unrelated role, and the total falls short. You can test your own figures with our points calculator, then let us check the evidence behind each point.

APPLICANT SITUATIONS

Profiles We Regularly Assess From Gujarat

Gujarat applicants come from very different backgrounds, and each background raises its own question. These are situations we meet often, described so you can see where your own case might need attention.

Engineers and IT graduates with several years of work

This is the profile most people picture. The deciding details are usually whether the work history is genuinely related to the degree and whether experience letters show dates, designation and duties clearly. Our case note on a skilled professional’s points review shows how recognition questions can change a total that looked safe on paper.

Diploma and vocational qualification holders

A polytechnic diploma or trade qualification can count, but only where the training lasted at least two years and is recognised by the relevant Indian authority. Shorter certificate courses do not meet that minimum. Recognition of vocational training in Germany usually needs detail about the training content itself, as our vocational recognition case illustrates.

People working in a family firm outside their field

Many graduates in Gujarat join a family trading or manufacturing business after college. Time spent there counts for points only when the work relates to the qualification you are relying on. A chemistry graduate running dispatch and accounts may have years of employment but little qualifying experience, and it is better to know that before the file is built.

Applicants over 40, and couples applying together

Age is a points factor, not a cut-off, so a 42-year-old simply has to reach 6 points without age points. Couples should plan together: where both partners qualify and apply, one of them receives an extra point, but each application still has to meet its own requirements.

BEFORE YOU APPLY

Money, Language and Timing

Three practical items decide when a Gujarat applicant can realistically file.

Financial means

You must show that you can support yourself. Current mission checklists use EUR 1,091 per month, which is EUR 13,092 for a twelve-month stay; confirm the figure again just before you apply because it is revised. Accepted proof is typically a blocked account (Sperrkonto), a formal obligation (Verpflichtungserklärung), or another form the mission’s checklist lists. Savings sitting in a parent’s fixed deposit are not proof by themselves. Our documents checklist for the Opportunity Card lists the supporting papers.

Language certificates

On the points route you need at least A1 German or B2 English as a basic requirement, and higher German levels add points. Exam dates and result times can be the slowest step, so we plan backwards from the date you want to file rather than booking a test and hoping it fits.

Health insurance and timing

Health insurance covering the stay is required. Appointment availability at the German mission varies, which our processing time page discusses without promising dates we cannot control.

LIFE ON THE CARD

What the Card Allows Once You Are in Germany

✓
A stay of up to one year dedicated to finding qualified work
✓
Part-time work averaging up to 20 hours a week while you search
✓
Trial employment of up to two weeks with each prospective employer
✓
A follow-up Opportunity Card of up to two years if you find qualified work but do not yet meet the conditions for another residence permit

The usual aim is to move into a skilled-worker residence permit or an EU Blue Card once a qualifying job is signed. The card itself is not a job offer and gives no assurance of one. If you already have a firm offer, a direct work visa may suit you better; our route comparison case walks through that decision. We also help you plan the search: a German-format CV, which job titles match your qualification, and savings beyond the minimum.

How We Prepare an Opportunity Card File

3
Language, funds, insurance
We sequence exams, the blocked account or other proof, and insurance so they are ready together.
4
File and search plan
Your application is assembled for the mission appointment, alongside a practical job-search plan for Germany.
HONEST ADVICE

When We Suggest Waiting Instead

Sometimes the right advice is not yet. If your total sits at 5 points with a German exam two months away, if the money is not yet in an acceptable form, or if names and dates differ between marksheets and passport, filing now only adds risk. Our reasoning follows the IndoWorld Route-Fit Framework, and the situations where we advise delaying are set out in when we would recommend not applying yet.

WORKING WITH US

How We Work With Applicants Around the State

Everything we do for an Opportunity Card file can be handled by video call, WhatsApp and email. Originals travel by courier only when a step genuinely needs paper. You attend your visa appointment in person at the German mission or its appointed centre; we make sure the file you carry there is complete and consistent.

Applicants near our base can meet us at the office, as described on our Vadodara Opportunity Card page. City pages cover situations we often see locally: salaried and IT profiles on the Ahmedabad page, family-business backgrounds and funding questions on the Surat page, and diploma and transcript logistics on the Rajkot page.

GOT QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

I have a B.Com and work in my family’s trading firm. Will that experience earn points?▲
Only experience related to the qualification you rely on counts toward points. Commerce-related work such as accounts or trade administration may relate to a B.Com, while unrelated duties would not. We read your actual role before counting anything.
Does a one-year ITI certificate meet the Opportunity Card requirements?▲
For the points route the vocational qualification must involve at least two years of training and be recognised by the Indian authority responsible for it. A shorter certificate course does not meet that basic requirement.
Can I use an English test instead of learning German?▲
On the points route you need either German at A1 or English at B2, so a B2 English certificate meets the language requirement and C1 or above adds 1 point. German is still worth starting: A2 and higher levels add points and make the job search in Germany easier.
Is there an upper age limit for the Opportunity Card?▲
No. Age only adds points: 2 up to age 35 and 1 from 36 to 40. Applicants over 40 can still qualify if they reach 6 points from other criteria or use the direct route.
My qualification is fully recognised. Do I still need 6 points?▲
No. Full recognition in Germany makes you a skilled worker for this purpose, and the card is then available without the points test or a language certificate. Financial means and the other general requirements still apply.
I live in a smaller town in Gujarat. How do I send documents?▲
We work from scans first and request originals by courier only if a step needs them. The visa appointment itself is attended by you in person at the German mission or its appointed centre.
