An Opportunity Card Plan That Fits Around a Full-Time Job

Many people who contact us about the Opportunity Card from Ahmedabad are already employed: software developers, engineers in corporate roles, analysts, founders of young companies. They usually have the qualification. What they lack is time to untangle recognition rules, language requirements and financial proof while serving a notice period or running a team.

IndoWorld Visa and Education Services is based in Vadodara and has no Ahmedabad branch, so we work with Ahmedabad applicants remotely, fitting calls around office hours. This page focuses on the questions salaried and self-employed professionals tend to raise. Programme basics are covered in our Germany Opportunity Card guide, and the Gujarat Opportunity Card page gives the statewide view. For where to give biometrics and how to arrange police certificates, apostilles and medicals from Gujarat, see our guide: Applying for a visa from Gujarat.

OFFER OR NO OFFER

Opportunity Card, Work Visa or EU Blue Card?

For technology and engineering professionals the Opportunity Card is not always the best tool. If a German employer has already made a written offer that meets the relevant salary and qualification conditions, applying directly for a work permit or an EU Blue Card is often simpler, because the job is the purpose of the visa.

The Opportunity Card suits people without a firm offer who want to be in Germany to interview, network and take trial days. A promising conversation with a recruiter is not the same as an offer. Our case comparing the card with a direct skilled-worker route shows how an unconfirmed job lead changes the recommendation. We apply the same reasoning set out in the IndoWorld Route-Fit Framework.

ELIGIBILITY

Where Graduates Usually Stand

✓
Degree fully recognised: direct route
If your degree is fully recognised in Germany, for instance shown as comparable through anabin or confirmed by a ZAB Statement of Comparability, you qualify as a skilled worker. You then need no points and no language certificate for the card, although general requirements such as financial means still apply.
✓
Recognition incomplete: points route
Otherwise you must hold a degree or at least two-year vocational qualification recognised in India, show German at A1 or English at B2, prove funds, and collect at least 6 points from recognition, experience, language, age and Germany-related criteria.

Many IT graduates find that the direct route is worth checking first. Where it is not open, a mid-career professional aged 35 or under with five years of related work and English at C1 already has 2 + 3 + 1 = 6 points. Check the details on our eligibility page or run the numbers in the points calculator.

APPLICANT SITUATIONS

Situations We Often Work Through With Ahmedabad Applicants

Several employers in a few years

Frequent job changes are normal in technology careers, but every employer needs to be documented. We check that experience letters from each company together cover the period you are claiming, that dates do not overlap or leave unexplained gaps, and that designations match the work you describe. Where a company has closed, we look for other evidence such as appointment letters, relieving letters and salary records.

Moved into a different field

A mechanical engineer who became a data analyst, or a commerce graduate now working in product management, may find that some years do not count, because experience points only recognise work related to the qualification you are relying on. The career-change points case shows how we separate relevant years from the rest.

Startup founders and self-employed consultants

If you run your own company, your experience is harder to prove than a salaried employee’s. Registration papers, contracts, invoices and tax filings can show the work, and our self-employed applicant guide explains how to present them. Keep in mind the card is a job-search permit aimed at employment; if your real aim is to build a business in Germany, a different route may fit.

Business owners exploring options for the family

Some owners of larger Ahmedabad businesses ask about the card for themselves or a son or daughter. The question is always the individual applicant’s qualification, experience and language, not the family’s wealth. Funds still have to be in the accepted form and in the applicant’s name where the checklist requires it.

TIMING

Resignations, Notice Periods and Money

We generally advise salaried applicants not to resign until the card has been issued. Plan your notice period around the expected decision instead, and use the waiting time for a German course, since German at A2 already adds a point and higher levels help in interviews.

For financial proof, German mission checklists in 2026 require EUR 1,091 per month, which is EUR 13,092 for twelve months; recheck this before transferring. A blocked account is the usual method. Salary savings can fund it, but the transfers should be traceable from your own accounts. Health insurance for the stay is also required. The Opportunity Card document checklist lists the supporting papers.

THE YEAR IN GERMANY

Using the Card Well Once You Arrive

✓
Up to one year of residence to look for qualified work
✓
Part-time work of up to 20 hours a week on average during the search
✓
Trial employment with a prospective employer for up to two weeks
✓
A follow-up card of up to two years if you have found qualified work but cannot yet move to another permit

The target is a skilled-worker permit or an EU Blue Card once you sign a qualifying contract. Arriving with applications already sent and interviews booked makes the year far more productive. Common assumptions about work visas are examined in our work visa misconceptions article. GOT QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I resign from my job before applying for the Opportunity Card?▲
We usually advise against it. Keep working until the card is issued, and plan your notice period around the expected decision so you are not left without income.
I work remotely for a German client from Ahmedabad. Does that earn the Germany-stay point?▲
No. That point needs at least six months of uninterrupted legal stay in Germany within the last five years, and not as a tourist. Remote work from India is useful experience but does not count as a stay.
My German employer is ready to offer me a contract. Do I still need the Opportunity Card?▲
Often not. With a qualifying written offer, a work visa or EU Blue Card application may be more direct. We compare both before you decide.
Does an MCA or BCA count as a qualification for the points route?▲
A university degree recognised by the relevant Indian authority can meet the basic qualification requirement. Whether it is also recognised in Germany decides whether the direct route or the points route applies.
One of my previous employers has shut down. How do I prove that experience?▲
Use whatever genuine records exist: appointment and relieving letters, salary slips, bank credits, tax records such as Form 16, and provident fund history. We help present them clearly.
Can my spouse and I apply together?▲
Yes. If both of you qualify and apply, one of you receives an extra point on the points route. Each application must still meet its own requirements, including financial proof.
