Canada PR FAQs — Frequently Asked Questions for Indian Applicants
What are the main pathways to Canada Permanent Residency?
Common pathways for Indian nationals include Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker Program, Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Trades), Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP), and family sponsorship. Express Entry is a federal system that ranks profiles with the CRS score. There is no fixed wait for an Invitation to Apply (ITA): it depends on your CRS score and the rounds IRCC holds. An ITA is an invitation to submit a PR application, not an approval, and Provincial Nominee Programs are separate from Express Entry.
What is the minimum CRS score needed for Canada PR?
There is no fixed minimum. The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) cut-off differs between general, program-specific and category-based rounds and changes from round to round; category-based rounds (for example French-language proficiency or health care and social services) can have lower cut-offs. Check IRCC's official rounds page for current cut-offs, and see our permanent residency misconceptions guide on why a single “safe score” does not exist.
How long does Canada PR processing take?
IRCC’s processing standard for Express Entry: 6 months for 80% of complete applications, counted from when IRCC receives your complete application (not from the ITA; after an ITA you have 60 days to submit it). Provincial nominee applications made outside Express Entry (base streams) have their own processing times; check IRCC's processing-times tool for current figures. Processing standards are not guarantees, and missing or incorrect documents can delay a decision or lead to refusal.
Can I apply for Canada PR without a job offer?
Yes. The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) does not require a job offer. A Canadian job offer no longer adds CRS points directly (this was removed from the scoring system in March 2025), but it can still support a Provincial Nominee Program application and is still part of eligibility for some programs, such as the Federal Skilled Trades Program.
What English score do I need for Canada PR?
For the Federal Skilled Worker Program, you need a minimum CLB 7 in all four abilities, using IELTS General Training, CELPIP General or PTE Core (check IRCC's equivalency table for the band scores). Higher scores earn more CRS points: the first official language is worth up to 136 points for a single applicant, reached at CLB 10 or higher in every ability.
Does my education need to be assessed for Canada PR?
Yes. An Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) from an IRCC-designated organisation (WES, ICAS, IQAS, etc.) is required to use foreign education for Federal Skilled Worker eligibility and to claim CRS points for it; physicians, pharmacists and architects must use their designated professional body. Start the ECA process early, as timelines vary by organisation and by how quickly your university sends transcripts.
Can my spouse be included in my Canada PR application?
Yes. Your spouse and dependent children are included in your application. Your spouse's language scores and education can also add CRS points to your profile if they are your accompanying spouse. Spouse factors can add up to 40 points, although your own age, education and language points are slightly lower when you apply with a spouse.
What documents are needed for Canada PR?
See the complete Canada PR documents checklist, which covers identity, education (ECA), language test results, employment references, police clearances, and medical examination requirements.
What is the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)?
PNPs allow Canadian provinces and territories to nominate skilled workers based on their specific labour market needs. Each province has its own streams and requirements. A nomination through an Express Entry-aligned stream adds 600 CRS points, which greatly improves the chance of an ITA but does not guarantee one; base streams are processed outside Express Entry. Our Express Entry versus provincial nomination case shows how we compare the two. Check Canada PR eligibility for details on qualifying for a PNP stream.
What is the age limit for Canada PR?
There is no official upper age limit for Canada PR. However, CRS points for age peak at 20–29 (for single applicants) and decline each year from age 30. From age 45, you receive zero age points. Age is one factor to consider in timing your application.
Is an Invitation to Apply (ITA) the same as PR approval?
No. An ITA invites you to submit a PR application within 60 days. IRCC then reviews that application, including your documents, admissibility, medical exam and police certificates, and decides whether to grant permanent residence. The CRS score only ranks profiles in the Express Entry pool; no score, and no consultant, can guarantee an invitation or an approval.
