Canada Express Entry CRS Points Calculator — Explained
Understand exactly how Canada's Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores are calculated for Express Entry. Factor-by-factor breakdown of CRS points for Indian applicants — with typical score examples and tips to improve your ranking.
What is the CRS Score?
The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is a points-based system used by IRCC to rank candidates in the Express Entry pool. The maximum possible score is 1,200 points. In regular draws, IRCC invites candidates with the highest CRS scores to apply for permanent residence. Understanding your CRS score is the first step to knowing whether — and when — you will receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
Round cut-offs: There is no fixed pass mark. IRCC holds general, program-specific and category-based rounds (for example French-language proficiency or health care and social services), each with its own cut-off that changes from round to round, so always check IRCC's official rounds-of-invitations page. Job-offer points were removed from the CRS on 25 March 2025.
CRS Points Breakdown — Factor by Factor
A. Core/Human Capital Factors (Without Spouse)
| Factor | Points Detail | Max Points |
|---|---|---|
| Age | Max at age 20-29; lower at 18-19; decreases each year after 29; 0 at 45+ | 110 pts |
| Education | Doctoral: 150; Master's or professional degree: 135; two or more credentials (one 3+ yrs): 128; bachelor's or 3+ yr program: 120; 2-yr program: 98; 1-yr program: 90; secondary: 30 | 150 pts |
| First Official Language (English/French) | CLB 10+: 34/ability; CLB 9: 31; CLB 8: 23; CLB 7: 17 | 136 pts |
| Second Official Language | Up to 6 per ability (CLB 9+); CLB 5+ needed to score | 24 pts |
| Canadian Work Experience | 1 yr: 40; 2 yrs: 53; 3 yrs: 64; 4 yrs: 72; 5 yrs+: 80 | 80 pts |
Education earned outside Canada: If your degree or diploma is from an institution outside Canada, you must first get an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) — a report from an IRCC-designated organization confirming your credential's Canadian equivalency — before education points can be awarded. See IRCC's list of designated ECA organizations for Express Entry.
B. Spouse/Partner Factors (If Accompanying)
| Factor | Max Points |
|---|---|
| Spouse Education | 10 pts |
| Spouse Language (1st official language) | 20 pts |
| Spouse Canadian Work Experience | 10 pts |
When applying with a spouse, the principal applicant's core factors are slightly reduced (e.g., max age points drop from 110 to 100, max education from 150 to 140), but the spouse factors compensate and often result in a higher total score for couples where both partners have strong profiles.
C. Skill Transferability Factors (Max 100 Points)
| Combination | Points |
|---|---|
| Education + CLB 7 or higher (first language) | up to 50 pts |
| Education + 1 year Canadian work experience | up to 50 pts |
| Foreign work experience + CLB 7 or higher | up to 50 pts |
| Foreign work experience + Canadian work experience | up to 50 pts |
| Trade certificate + CLB 5 or higher | up to 50 pts |
Skill transferability points reward combinations that suggest you'll integrate successfully into the Canadian job market. Strong English + foreign work experience is the most common combination for Indian applicants.
D. Additional Points (Bonus Factors)
| Factor | Points Awarded |
|---|---|
| Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) nomination | 600 pts (greatly improves the chance of an ITA; not a guarantee) |
| Canadian post-secondary study (3+ years) | 30 pts |
| Canadian post-secondary study (1-2 years) | 15 pts |
| Sibling in Canada (citizen or PR) | 15 pts |
| French language skills (NCLC 7+ in all abilities) | 25 or 50 pts |
Sample CRS Scores — Typical Indian Applicant Profiles
| Profile | Age | Education | Language | What drives the score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| B.Tech Engineer, no Canadian experience, single | 27 | Bachelor's (120) | CLB 9 in all abilities | Full age points; skill-transferability points depend on years of foreign experience |
| B.Tech Engineer, 2 yrs Canadian work exp, single | 29 | Bachelor's (120) | CLB 9 in all abilities | Canadian experience (53 pts for 2 years) plus transferability combinations |
| M.Tech / Master's, no Canadian exp, single | 26 | Master's (135) | CLB 9 in all abilities | Higher education points; language remains the biggest lever |
| B.Tech Engineer, spouse with degree | 30 | Bachelor's | CLB 8 | Core points are lower with a spouse; spouse factors can add up to 40 |
| Engineer with PNP nomination | Any | Any | Any | Base score + 600; greatly improves the chance of an ITA |
Tip: These profiles are illustrative, not score predictions. Use the official IRCC CRS criteria and points grid to calculate your exact score. Your score can change as you update your language scores or gain work experience (a job offer no longer adds CRS points).
