Canada Permanent Residency through Express Entry is a points-based immigration system that manages applications for three federal economic programs. Most Indian applicants apply under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW) or Canadian Experience Class (CEC). The system uses a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score to rank candidates — those with the highest scores receive Invitations to Apply (ITAs) in regular draws.
The Three Express Entry Programs
1. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW) — Most Common for Indian Applicants
The FSW is the primary pathway for skilled Indian professionals who do not yet have Canadian work experience.
- Minimum 1 year of continuous full-time skilled work experience in the past 10 years (NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3)
- Language ability: minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 in all four abilities (speaking, listening, reading, writing) — IELTS overall 6.0 with no band below 6.0
- Education: Canadian secondary certificate or equivalent foreign credential
- Score at least 67 points on the FSW selection grid (age, education, language, experience, adaptability, arranged employment)
- Proof of sufficient settlement funds (varies by family size; approx. CAD $13,000 for a single applicant)
- Not inadmissible to Canada (criminal, health, security grounds)
2. Canadian Experience Class (CEC) — For Those Who Have Worked in Canada
The CEC is for skilled workers who already have Canadian work experience — typically from a work permit or Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP).
- Minimum 1 year of full-time skilled work experience in Canada in the past 3 years (NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3)
- Language: CLB 7 for NOC TEER 0 and 1; CLB 5 for NOC TEER 2 and 3
- Plan to live outside Quebec
3. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST) — For Trade Workers
The FST is for qualified tradespeople in industrial, electrical, construction, and similar occupations.
- Minimum 2 years of full-time skilled trades experience in the past 5 years (NOC TEER 2 or 3 in eligible trades)
- Language: CLB 5 for speaking and listening; CLB 4 for reading and writing
- Either a valid job offer in Canada for at least 1 year, OR a certificate of qualification from a Canadian provincial/territorial body
CRS Score — How the Points Work
The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) assigns points to candidates based on human capital factors. The maximum possible CRS score is 1,200 points. Candidates are ranked and the highest-scoring candidates receive ITAs in periodic draws.

Typical draw cutoff: IRCC has moved away from broad, all-program draws — the last one was in April 2024, at a cutoff of 529. Since then, invitations have come almost entirely through category-based draws (healthcare, STEM, trades, French language, and others), where cutoffs have ranged roughly from the high 300s to mid 500s depending on the category and round. A Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) nomination adds 600 points, virtually guaranteeing an ITA. Always check IRCC's official "Express Entry rounds of invitations" page for the latest cutoff.

How to Increase Your CRS Score
- Improve IELTS scores: Scoring CLB 9 (IELTS 7.5) instead of CLB 7 can add 40–56 extra points. This is one of the most impactful improvements.
- Apply with spouse/partner: Your partner's language scores and education can add up to 40 additional points to your CRS.
- Apply through a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP): A provincial nomination adds 600 points. Each Canadian province has its own streams for different occupations.
- Gain Canadian work experience: Work in Canada on a valid work permit (Express Entry-linked LMIA or Post-Graduate Work Permit) and build CEC eligibility with higher base CRS scores.
- Canadian education: A 1-year or longer Canadian post-secondary credential adds 15–30 CRS points.
- Sibling in Canada: If you have a sibling who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you gain 15 bonus points.
