Canada PR Processing Time — Express Entry Timeline
Understand the complete Canada PR timeline from Express Entry profile creation to landing in Canada — including draw frequency, post-ITA processing, and what causes delays for Indian applicants.
Quick Overview
Stage-by-Stage Timeline
| Stage | Duration | Key Actions |
|---|---|---|
| Preparation (ECA + IELTS + profile documents) | Varies (ECA body, test dates, document collection) | WES ECA application, IELTS exam, employment letters, proof of funds |
| Express Entry Profile Active (waiting for ITA) | Up to 12 months per profile | Profile sits in pool; an ITA is possible when your score meets the cut-off of a round you are eligible for. If not invited within 12 months the profile expires and a new one can be created |
| Post-ITA Document Submission | 60 days (deadline) | Upload all documents, complete medical exam, submit application |
| IRCC Processing & Multi-Stream Assessment (Post-AOR) | Federal EE: ~6 months | Enhanced PNP: ~8–14 months total | Base PNP: ~12–24+ months | Statutory Post-AOR stages: R10 completeness check → Biometrics & Medical Assessment → Criminality & Eligibility review → Security screening by CBSA/CSIS → Final Decision / COPR. Service standards are administrative goals, not legal guarantees. |
| PR Confirmation (COPR + PRTD) | Varies after a positive decision | Receive Confirmation of Permanent Residence; make landing trip |
IRCC's target: 80% of complete Express Entry applications to be processed within 6 months of submission, measured from receipt of a complete application to a final decision. IRCC says its processing times include the time it takes to give biometrics. Waiting for an ITA, preparing the ECA and language test, collecting police certificates and the medical exam, and the steps after a decision (confirmation of permanent residence and landing) mostly happen before or after the period this standard measures. Individual cases can take longer, for example when additional documents, background checks or medical review are needed. Check IRCC's official processing-times tool for the current figure.
How Long Will You Wait for an ITA?
The wait for an Invitation to Apply depends mainly on your CRS score relative to the current draw cutoff. There is no fixed timeline, and no score guarantees an invitation: cut-offs differ between general, program-specific and category-based rounds and change from round to round.
| Your CRS Score | Likely Position | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Comfortably above recent cut-offs for rounds you qualify for | An invitation is possible in an upcoming round, but not certain | Create your profile and keep documents ready for the 60-day deadline |
| Close to recent cut-offs | Uncertain; depends on round type and timing | Create your profile; check category eligibility and improve language scores |
| Well below recent cut-offs | Less likely without changes to your profile | Work on score drivers (language, experience, French) or explore provincial options |
Factors That Delay Canada PR Processing
| Factor | Potential Delay |
|---|---|
| Additional background or security checks | Varies case by case |
| Incomplete or inconsistent documents at time of submission | Can extend processing (additional document request) |
| Medical exam abnormalities requiring additional review | Can extend processing |
| Missing PCC from a country you previously lived in | Time needed to obtain the certificate |
| Employment letter not matching NOC claimed | Possible refusal or extended review |
| Misrepresentation flag on application | Significant delays or refusal |
Many of these delays can be reduced by careful preparation. See what handling thousands of client cases has taught us about the documentation issues that most often slow down an application.
Important: You have exactly 60 days from the ITA date to submit a complete application. If you miss this window, your ITA expires and your profile is removed from the pool, so you would need to create a new profile.
