A complete document checklist for Canada PR through Express Entry — from ECA and IELTS to police clearance certificates, proof of funds, and medical exams. Compiled by IndoWorld Visa experts in Vadodara.

Complete Canada PR Documents Checklist

1. Identity Documents

  • Valid passport — all pages including blank pages (scan front and back of data page)
  • Previous passports (if any) — full scans
  • National ID or Aadhaar card
  • Birth certificate (with certified translation if not in English)
  • Marriage certificate (if applicable, with certified translation)
  • Divorce decree or death certificate of spouse (if applicable)

2. Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)

  • ECA report from a IRCC-designated organization — WES (World Education Services) is most commonly used by Indian applicants
  • Original degree certificates and mark sheets submitted to WES (WES keeps originals; you retain copies)
  • WES ECA reference number to include in your Express Entry profile
  • Note: ECA is mandatory for education points unless you have a Canadian credential

3. Language Test Results

  • IELTS Academic or General Training score report (or CELPIP-General) — must be less than 2 years old at time of ITA
  • TEF or TCF scores if claiming French language points
  • Test reference number to enter in Express Entry profile

4. Work Experience Documents

  • Employment reference letters on company letterhead — must include: job title, duties and responsibilities, start/end dates, hours per week, annual salary, employer contact details, manager signature
  • Pay slips or salary statements (last 3–6 months per employer)
  • Appointment letters and promotion letters
  • Business registration documents (if self-employed)
  • Form 16 / IT returns (as additional proof of Indian work income)

5. Proof of Funds

  • Bank statements (last 6 months) for all accounts — savings, current, fixed deposits
  • Minimum required funds (CAD): single applicant ~$15,263; family of 2 ~$19,001; family of 3 ~$23,360; family of 4 ~$28,362 (2026 figures — these update annually each spring, always verify the current amount on the IRCC website before applying)
  • Mutual fund / investment statements
  • Property valuation documents (may be requested as supplementary evidence)
  • Note: proof of funds not required if you have a valid LMIA-based job offer

6. Police Clearance Certificates (PCC)

  • Indian PCC — from the Passport Seva portal (RPO-issued PCC) for each country you have lived in for 6+ months since age 18
  • PCC from any other country where you lived 6+ months (if applicable)
  • If previously lived in Canada for 6+ months, an RCMP fingerprint-based criminal record check is required

7. Medical Examination

  • Medical exam by an IRCC-designated Panel Physician (list available on IRCC website) — exam must be done AFTER receiving ITA
  • The physician submits results directly to IRCC; you receive an IMM 1017 medical receipt
  • Chest X-ray (for applicants 11 years and older)
  • Applicable vaccines documentation

8. Additional Documents (if applicable)

  • Provincial Nomination certificate (if applying through PNP stream)
  • LMIA-backed job offer letter and employer documents (if claiming arranged employment points)
  • Proof of Canadian education (transcript, diploma) if claiming study bonus points
  • Proof of sibling relationship (birth certificates of both you and sibling, sibling's Canadian PR/citizenship) if claiming sibling bonus points
  • Children's birth certificates (for principal applicant with dependants)

Important Notes on Document Preparation

WES ECA takes 7–14 weeks. Apply for your WES ECA as the very first step — it is on the critical path for your Express Entry profile. Do not wait until other documents are ready.

IELTS must be valid at ITA. Your IELTS score must not be older than 2 years at the time you receive your Invitation to Apply (not submission date). If your score is approaching 2 years, retake the exam before creating your profile.

Employment letters are critically examined. A generic employment certificate is not sufficient. The letter must specifically list your job duties (matching the NOC code you claim), hours worked, and period of employment. Inconsistent letters are the leading cause of misrepresentation findings.

Police clearance has no standard validity window. IRCC does not specify an exact validity period for PCCs, but they typically expect them to be recent (within 3 months is safest). Obtain your PCC after you receive your ITA, not before.

Frequently Asked Questions — Canada PR Document Checklist

What is the complete Canada PR Express Entry document checklist?

The core documents required for a Canada PR application through Express Entry are: valid passport (minimum 6 months validity beyond intended stay); language test results — IELTS or CELPIP for English, TEF for French; Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) from WES or another designated organisation; work experience proof including detailed employer reference letters, pay slips, and T4/Form 16 tax slips; Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) from India and each country lived in for 6+ months since age 18; medical examination by a IRCC-designated physician; Provincial Nomination Letter if applicable; and proof of settlement funds in the form of recent bank statements or investment statements.

What is WES evaluation and is it mandatory for Canada PR?

World Education Services (WES) evaluates Indian degrees and diplomas to determine their Canadian educational equivalency. It is mandatory for Express Entry — without a valid ECA you cannot claim CRS education points, which typically means 120–150 fewer points and no realistic chance of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA). The process takes 7–15 weeks from document submission (courier delivery times excluded). Apply online at wes.org and have your university send transcripts directly to WES.

How much proof of funds is required for Canada PR?

IRCC requires the following minimum settlement funds (2026 figures, updated annually each spring): 1 person — CAD 15,263; 2 people — CAD 19,001; 3 people — CAD 23,360; 4 people — CAD 28,362; 5 people — CAD 30,690. Funds must be liquid and accessible — bank savings, fixed deposits, or liquid investments qualify. The funds cannot be borrowed. Provide 3–6 months of bank statements showing a consistent balance. Note: if you already have a valid job offer in Canada, the funds requirement may not apply.

What police clearance certificate is needed for Canada PR?

You need a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) from India and from every other country where you lived for 6 or more months since turning 18. The Indian PCC is obtained from your regional passport office (apply via the Passport Seva portal). The PCC is valid for 12 months from the date of issue — time it carefully so it does not expire before your application is approved. If you have lived in countries such as the UAE, the US, the UK, or any Gulf country, you will also need PCCs from those jurisdictions.

How long are IELTS scores valid for Canada PR?

IELTS scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. They must remain valid throughout the entire application processing period — if they expire while your application is under review, you may need to retest. For the Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program, you need a minimum of CLB 7 in all four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), which corresponds to IELTS scores of approximately L:6.0, R:6.0, W:6.0, S:6.0. Higher IELTS scores (particularly CLB 9 and above) can add up to 160 CRS points, significantly boosting your Comprehensive Ranking System score.
