Canada Express Entry CRS Points Calculator — Explained
Understand exactly how Canada's Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores are calculated for Express Entry. Factor-by-factor breakdown of CRS points for Indian applicants — with typical score examples and tips to improve your ranking.
What is the CRS Score?
The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is a points-based system used by IRCC to rank candidates in the Express Entry pool. The maximum possible score is 1,200 points. In regular draws, IRCC invites candidates with the highest CRS scores to apply for permanent residence. Understanding your CRS score is the first step to knowing whether — and when — you will receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
Typical draw cutoffs: All-program Express Entry draws have had cutoffs ranging from 480 to 545+ in recent years. Category-based draws (STEM, healthcare, trades, French speakers) can have lower cutoffs of 430-470.
CRS Points Breakdown — Factor by Factor
A. Core/Human Capital Factors (Without Spouse)
| Factor | Points Detail | Max Points |
|---|---|---|
| Age | Max at age 20-29; decreases before 18 and after 29; 0 at 45+ | 110 pts |
| Education | PhD/Master's: 135-150; 2-yr Bachelor's+: 128; 1-yr Bachelor's+: 120; 2-yr diploma: 91; 1-yr post-sec: 84; Secondary: 28 | 150 pts |
| First Official Language (English/French) | CLB 10+: 34/ability; CLB 9: 31; CLB 8: 23; CLB 7: 17 | 136 pts |
| Second Official Language | CLB 5+ in all 4 abilities | 24 pts |
| Canadian Work Experience | 1 yr: 40; 2 yrs: 53; 3 yrs: 64; 4 yrs: 72; 5 yrs+: 80 | 80 pts |
B. Spouse/Partner Factors (If Accompanying)
| Factor | Max Points |
|---|---|
| Spouse Education | 10 pts |
| Spouse Language (1st official language) | 20 pts |
| Spouse Canadian Work Experience | 10 pts |
When applying with a spouse, the principal applicant's core factors are slightly reduced (e.g., max age points drop from 110 to 100, max education from 150 to 140), but the spouse factors compensate and often result in a higher total score for couples where both partners have strong profiles.
C. Skill Transferability Factors (Max 100 Points)
| Combination | Points |
|---|---|
| Education + CLB 7 or higher (first language) | up to 50 pts |
| Education + 1 year Canadian work experience | up to 50 pts |
| Foreign work experience + CLB 7 or higher | up to 50 pts |
| Foreign work experience + Canadian work experience | up to 50 pts |
| Trade certificate + CLB 5 or higher | up to 50 pts |
Skill transferability points reward combinations that suggest you'll integrate successfully into the Canadian job market. Strong English + foreign work experience is the most common combination for Indian applicants.
D. Additional Points (Bonus Factors)
| Factor | Points Awarded |
|---|---|
| Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) nomination | 600 pts (virtually guarantees ITA) |
| Canadian post-secondary study (2+ years) | 30 pts |
| Canadian post-secondary study (1-2 years) | 15 pts |
| Sibling in Canada (citizen or PR) | 15 pts |
